    3. HR Roles Administrative – focusing on HR clerical administration & recordkeeping Operational & employee advocate – Managing most HR activities in keeping with the org. strategy. Strategic – Helping define the strategy relative to human capital & its contribution to organizational results.

    4. HR Career Opportunities There are a variety of jobs within the HR career field, ranging from executive to clerical (Mathis & Jackson, 2008). HR generalist - HR specialists – benefits, recruitment, compensation, training/development, HRIS, Labor relations, EEO, Health/Safety, Employee Assistance/Counseling, Employee Communications.

    5. HR Careers – Professionalism & Certification PHR/SPHR Certification – most widely known HR certifications are the Professional in Human Resource (PHR) and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) – these are administered by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) http://www.shrm.org/

    6. Other HR Certifications Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), sponsored by the Worldat-Work Association. Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), sponsored by the International foundation of Employee Benefits Plans. Certified Safety Professional (CSP), sponsored by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHSY) given by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

    7. Preparing for a Career in HR More than just a “I like working with people” profession. Strategic role has increased dramatically – requires individuals to develop a broad business background as well as specialized knowledge in managing the human assets of an organization.
