Two Dimensions • Position can be anywhere in the plane • Again, select an origin • Draw two mutually perpendicular lines meeting at the origin • Select +/- directions for horizontal (x) and vertical (y) axes • Any position in the plane is given by two signed numbers • A vector points to this position • The square of its length is, R2= Rx2+ Ry2 • The angle of that vector is,  = tan-1(Ry / Rx) R Ry Rx = R cos  Ry = R sin  q Rx Physics 103, Spring 2004, U.Wisconsin

The ball has no acceleration in the horizontal direction.
