  1. Context • Intensification of farming practices, adjustments in crop rotation, large number of wastewater treatment works, cattle poaching and siltation have resulted in a negative impact upon water quality and flow. • A steering group had already been formed by Severn Trent Water to tackle drinking water quality issues in the Upper Avon catchment. So far they have been very amenable to being involved in the pilot and can see the joint benefits. • How is the work going? • Upper Avon Strategic Partnership Steering (UASP) plus additions form a Steering Group of 24 members from 15 organisations. • One workshop has taken place to collate the attendees’ issues and aims. • Next workshop will be 2nd Feb to discuss how to tackle the problems and develop a plan of action. • Many projects already underway (cattle fencing, catchment mapping, tree planting, SUDS etc) River Leam, Warwickshire Fairly small catchment of ~360km². Mostly rural farmland with a couple of market towns, a reservoir, two canals and some marshland. Largest settlement is Leamington Spa, located at the downstream catchment boundary. Snipe : A sign of healthy wetland habitats “Thanks for an excellent event - it was really well run and facilitated and gave me a really good insight into WFD and the Leam” Simon West, Forestry Commission “The pilot is an new  opportunity for everyone to work together, better” Philippa Mansfield Natural England • Challenges • Risk of meeting fatigue amongst stakeholder group; • Confidence in evidence to satisfaction of stakeholders; • Funding and resources; • Keeping the momentum going for action implementation; • Effective engagement with landowners & public. Objectives of the pilot Use partnership working and wider engagement to improve water quality and habitat diversity in the Leam catchment with focus on… 1) Reducing phosphate levels 2) Reducing pesticide levels 3) Encouraging the planting of sustainable woodland Focus of the pilot Provide a joined up approach Address all sources of pollution in the catchment Work better in partnerships Influence landowners through advice, negotiation grants etc Deal with issues based on Woodlands for Water evidence Deliver improvements for water quality and the river environment as a whole. Identify better use of resources
