3. SHSM Programs in Halton CDSB • Arts & Culture @ CtK • Horticulture & Landscaping @ ND • Health & Wellness @ STA (Health Care Science /Medical Technologies) • All set to launch February 2008 • Open to all students in both Halton Boards • Some SHSM programs carry a “value added fee” ($100 - $250)

4. Specialist High Skills Major • Set by the Ministry of Education, through consultations • with industry partners and sector councils • Addresses all four pathways (A, C, U, W) • Has five required components

5. SHSM: Required Components • Bundled Credits – • Sector-Recognized Certifications • & Safety Awareness Training • Experiential Learning • Ontario Skills Passport • Reach Ahead Experiences

7. Certifications & Awareness Training • A required number of additional certifications, particularly focused on workplace safety are selected from a list • All SHSM programs include: Generic WHMIS, CPR, First Aid

Reach Ahead Opportunities • Made available for each students specific to the student’s pathway, Apprenticeship, College, University, Work • Dual Credit Programs, students earn college credits • Field trips to workplace, college, university, unions, etc. • Guest speakers discussing various occupations

10. Summer Internship ProgramExperiential Learning • Five to eight weeks during summer could be offered • Full time and could be paid • Local business involvement • Two cooperative education credits (day or evenings) • Supported by local industries

15. Online Registration • Students may register as “Interested Student” please by logging on to www.onsorts.ca • OEN and Date of Birth is required to log • Limited enrollment and interviews are in progress for next intake period

The Arts & Culture SHSM program focus • Fundamental knowledge and transferable skills specific to the Performing Arts industry • Practical and theoretical application of Drama, Dance and Musical Theatre as well as Vocal & Instrumental Music • Active student engagement in performances, productions and other community-based events

18. Regardless of whether your child chooses to pursue a career or post secondary study in the Arts, the skills developed through a concentrated study in the arts have many benefits. Students develop • Critical thinking skills • Think creatively and therefore solve problems creatively • Improved confidence and self esteem • Personal discipline, commitment • Strong work habits ALL ESSENTIAL for SUCCESS in the ARTS and in LIFE

19. Program Structure • Two year program • Entry in grade 11 • Apply through OnSORTS, interview time will be required for entry - No audition required • February 2008 entry – applicants are all CtK students to date

Program Structure • All non CtK students applying to the program will be asked to sign a contract during the interview wherein they agree to wear the school uniform and participate in all Catholic school functions including taking Religion • Fee is $150.00 for the two year program – per student • Specialization = High Standard
