  4. B. Rise to power 1.1799- French lost faith in Directory a. Nap. overthrows Directory in a coup d'état b. Set-up 3-man governing board called Consulate w/ him as “First Consul”

  5. III. Power Through Plebiscites YES! A. 1800- Should he be given all pwr in a new constitution? B. 1802- Should he be made Consul for life? C. 1804- Should he be made emperor? 1. Significance: Republic replaced w/ absolute monarchy – WTH? YES! YES!
