  1. S5, S6 and S7 LSC - VIRGO Spring Meeting, Baton Rouge LIGO-G070070-A-DM. Zucker 3/20/2007 Photo credit: Shawn Lani and Peter Richards, San Francisco explOratorium

  2. Hx-L1 Coincidence Accumulation ~ 56% 50% ~ 45% 100% Daniel Sigg, 3/13/06  Project 1y intersite coincidence @ September 1 2007 (±)

  3. A Dan Hoak Production

  4. New! Improved!! 4k GOAL 2k GOAL BNS Sensitivity History Daniel Sigg, 3/13/07

  5. Progress against upconversion • Still not clear on physics behind coupling of seism (& other LF disturbances) to ~100 Hz strain, but… • Reduced forces applied to TM’s improved both sensitivity and stationarity on H1 and L1 in January • H1: partial implementation of PEPI, retuned WFS, SUS damping --> ~ 2x reduction in RMS force • H1 now solid at 15 + MPc, nearly independent of seism (!) • L1: increased bandwidth tidal loop (ETMx only) & LF integrators • L1 now around 14 + Mpc, also much less variable w/ seism

  6. Progress against upconversion (H1) Factor of ~ 2 or 3 Keita Kawabe 1/29/07 Justin Garofoli, 3/13/07

  7. Progress against upconversion (L1) Sam Waldman, 3/13/07

  8. What next? Mission Priorities: Detect Gravitational Waves Detect Lots of Gravitational Waves Grow a Healthy Field

  9. S6 S5 S4 Nutzman et al., arXiv:astro-ph/0402091 v2, 28 Jun 2004 Looking Forward

  10. ELI VENT • Possible concerns: • Sufficient coincidence with VIRGO & GEO • GRB and galactic SN coverage • Preparedness & crew training • Running out of data 1y Coincidence Post-run diag. ELI ready Other? Timeline

  11. S5 ELI INST/COMM S6 AdL INSTALL AdL COMMISSION S7 Timeline (zoom) L1 POST-S5 VE MOD SEI INST MC CLN SEI COMMISSIONING EQS OMCSUS INST OMC/DC RO COMMISSIONING PSL INST PSL COMMIS\ POST-S5 EQS H1 VE MOD SEI INST SEI COMMISSIONING OMCSUS INST OMC/DC MC CLN PSL INST PSL COMMISSIONING

  12. Resource Considerations • ELI depends on simultaneous tag-team installation & commissioning at LHO and LLO • Full staff complement is expected at both sites • AdL hits full throttle with ‘08 funding • AdL also expects full staff complement immediately after ELI installation Continuing S5 (incl. keeping H2 up) will impact S6 and AdL

  13. Summary At the 3/4 point, S5 has met or exceeded all our goals! (well, perhaps all but one) Optimized strategy for S6 and S7 will require some disciplined decisions Now is the time for input and discussion!
