Drones for Law Enforcement: Benefits and Use Cases

Law enforcement agencies are investing in equipment that takes some of the risks out of doing their jobs and reduces that overall cost. Police helicopters can be a major advantage when pursuing criminals and conducting widespread surveillance. However, they are expensive and have limited capabilities to see inside buildings. Law enforcement drone policy allows agencies to explore new, more effective ways of supporting operations with technology, leading to the consistent adaptation of drones. In this article, we discuss the benefits and use cases for drones in law enforcement.<br>

  1. Drones for Law Enforcement: Benefits and Use Cases

  2. In this article, we discuss the benefits and use cases for drones in law enforcement.

  3. Close Range Surveillance Perhaps the most important benefit of having police drowns is close-range surveillance. When assessing an area or looking for a suspect, the police have several methods of surveillance. Unfortunately, they are either expensive or put officers in danger. A drone can be a relatively cost-effective way to conduct surveillance while keeping officers safely out of danger. Drones and law enforcement work well together when trying to conduct surveillance. Drones are capable of entering buildings and continuing to track suspects even when they flee inside. Most small format drones are capable of being piloted indoors for basic reconnaissance. This makes it possible to send a drone in after a suspect and letting police stay safely outside until they can formulate a plan to get the suspect safely.

  4. Threat Assessments Drones are also an effective way to assess potential threats. There are many situations where having more information can be critical to resolving situations. For example, hostage situations can be dangerous if police cannot assess the potential threat. Drones make it possible to sneak into an area and collect intel on the situation without putting people at risk. Drones can be outfitted with an array of sensors that let it scan an area in different ways. Because of this, drones are also effective at assessing threats in disaster areas. Combined with sensors like NOAR Technologies’ Leica radar system, a drone can scan a large area for hazards and provide feedback in real-time.

  5. Some of the best drones for a public safety drone program will be armed with both a laser and computer-generated imaging systems. These will allow the operators to quickly analyze any potential danger areas. If a drone cannot fly into a certain area because it poses a risk to the pilot or another aircraft, the program will have all of the means necessary to fly through that area without creating a hazard. For instance, it might be able to navigate through a thick forest that would be too risky to fly through unless the pilot is well trained in navigating through dense trees or a mountainside. This allows for the best drones for a public safety drone program to operate autonomously in nearly all situations.

  6. Search and Rescue During search and rescue operations, police departments consistently call in support from other organizations with more airborne forces. Some departments have helicopters, but the number is limited, restricting what they can do. The cost of training pilots for helicopters is also much higher than law enforcement drone training. Police departments could have a drone rescue service outfitted with a small fleet of drones that could cover a large area during a search and rescue operation. For the cost of a single helicopter, the police department could have multiple drones that can cover an area quickly and report back vital information, in some cases, faster than manned air support could.

  7. Discover New Uses Along the Way As law enforcement’s use of drones continues to develop, law enforcement agencies will find new ways to utilize it in the field. Drones are still a developing technology, and experts expect to see continued improvements throughout the next few decades. Law enforcement agencies that are interested in adopting drones for their operations can partner with companies like NOAR Technologies. NOAR’s technology experts can recommend the best options for specific situations, and find solutions to problems that law enforcement agencies need.
