You Know That What You Teach Is Important • You know that what you teach your students is of great value. • You see the positive results of what you have taught every day. • You see your students gain and improve upon valuable skills. • You know that your students improve their job status or gain employment with the skills that are taught and learned in your classes.

4. Do Others Know Your Course is Designed to Teach the Proper Material? • Your course outline might look great but who says that what is on the outline is important? • In education’s current quest for accountability, do the appropriate agencies know that your curriculum is designed to teach what is important? • Do your industry partners know that what is taught in your classes is important?

5. Standards-basedCurriculum • Are Based on research • Are Rigorous & relevant • Describe what to teach, not how to teach it • Are a continuing commitment to excellence.

Standards-based Curriculum • It is the documentation that shows that what is taught in a course is valuable and important. • It will satisfy government agencies. • It will satisfy industry partners. • It gives credibility to your program’s accountability. Career Technical Education Standards • Are designed to support a seamless transition to postsecondary education and entry to a career. • Support mastery of essential employability skills and rigorous academic content standards. • Are concise statements that reflect the essential knowledge and skills students are expected to master and include foundation standards that apply to all industry sectors. • Build on existing career technical education standards, appropriate standards established by business and industry, and academic content standards. Linking your curriculum to the standards- You Are The Expert • You are the expert in your field of instruction. • You know what your curriculum is. • You are the best person on this staff to be able to link your curriculum to the appropriate standards. 18. Review the Foundation Standards • Review the list of Foundation Standards • Familiarize yourself with each of the Foundation Standards • Know them well enough to be able to link them with your items in your curriculum.

19. Review the CTE Career Pathway Standards For Your Course(s) • Review the list of CTE Career Pathway Standards • Familiarize yourself with each of the Career Pathway CTE Standards • Know them well enough to be able to link them with your items in your curriculum.

20. Lumpers and Splitters • Lumpers- take several like items and put them together as one large unit • Advantage- less items to manage • Splitters- take an item and divide it into several smaller pieces. Advantage- can take special note of minute differences

21. Today, We Are Lumpers • When aligning standards to our curriculum, we are going to lump like items together. • It is easier and still accomplishes what we need to do- does the linking and show that your courses are teaching what needs to be taught. • We don’t want to lump EVERYTHING together…..just like items. “Safety” covers safe use of power tools, use of appropriate safety equipment, how to handle flammable material, etc… These are all lumped under “safety.”

22. Not All Curricula Are Created Equal • Some course curricula are written with “content skills” • Some are written in outline format with main topics and individual tasks. • Other formats are used also. • Know your curriculum.

23. Linking • Look at each major topic/outline item/etc. in your curriculum. • Find the CTE Foundation Standards that corresponds to that item. Write the Foundation Standards numbers down for each item. • Find CTE Career Pathway Standards that correspond to major items. Write the CTE Standard numbers down for each item.

Remember, they cover math, reading, writing and a variety of other things. • There might only be one, two or a few CTE Pathway Standards for each of your course outline items. • Foundation Standards are broad while Career Pathway Standards are narrow.
