  5. simile “And fleckled darkness like a drunkard reels” (line 3)

  6. classical allusions “From forth day’s path and Titan’s fiery wheels” (line 4)

  7. reversed word “upfill” (line 5) (instead of fill up)

  8. reversed thought • Reversing our expectations of ideas • “The earth that’s nature’s mother is her tomb; / What is her burying grave, that is her womb” (lines 9-10) • We don’t associate “nature” and “mother,” nor do we associate “grave” with birth.

  9. reversed sentence construction • scrambled sentence • “And from her womb children of divers kind / We suckling on her natural bosom find” (lines 11-12) • Regular construction: • We find children from her womb suckling on her natural bosom.

  12. In small groups: • Study your passage and • Prepare a summary of the lines • Identify three examples of language tricks used. Discuss how these specific tricks enhance the passage for your group. • Identify the most important line, and explain why it is important. • What else do you notice: hyperbole, pun, contracted words, rhyme or rhyme patterns, etc. Be prepared to present.
