Warm up 2/14 • Pre WWII question-think back to before WWII started to answer the first two questions: • (LVL: 1) What was Britain’s policy of “Appeasement” towards Hitler and Nazi Germany? • (LVL: 2) Did this policy work? Explain. • (LVL: 3) What is the United States’ obligation to spread democracy and freedom throughout the world?

  3. WHAT IS THE COLD WAR? • The U.S. and the Soviet Union became increasingly hostile towards one another after WWII. • This led to an era of confrontation and competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1945-1990.

Communism vs. Capitalism • Communism explained….. • “a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state” and “public/government ownership over major means of production” • Cow example….. • You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk and gives you enough to live. • Capitalism explained….. • “Free enterprise economy, in which most of the means of production are privately owned” • Cow example…. • You have two cows, you sell one and buy a bull, and build a herd of cows

FDR never wanted a world war ever again April 25th, 1945; (FDR died of a stroke on April 12) representatives from 50 nations met in San Francisco to organize the UNITED NATIONS 11 nations were part of security council 5 permanent members: Britain, France, China, Soviet Union and the United States…….. GQ: Why these countries?

Yalta Conference • Feb. 1945 (yes, FDR is still alive) • Big Three Allies meet in a Soviet resort, Yalta, to discuss Germany and rest of Europe • What they decided….. • Allow eastern European nations to create their own governments that had “all democratic elements” • Divide Germany into 4 zones (and Berlin) • G.B., U.S. France and Soviet Union • GQ: Why do you think Germany was being divided?

  7. Truman takes control • FDR dies on April 12, 1945 of a stroke…..Harry S. Truman takes over as President • “We must stand up to the Russians” -a quote from Truman the day after taking office. • Quick Write: How do you think Britain’s policy of Appeasment towards Germany will influence Truman’s policies towards the Soviet Union?
