  2. Why should you care about this presentation? There is a way to do this job and be healthy But it may require you to change the way you think about your resilience and how you take care of yourself

  3. Key Question for the Day… How do you nurture your own resilience so the school year does not deplete you?

  4. How are you entering this school year? 1 = Not close to being ready for school; 10 = Never felt more ready!

  5. Cognitive Impact of Chronic Stress • Diverted Attention – inability to stay on task until completion (lesson planning, reading, listening in staff meetings) • Foggy Brain – slow thinking, lack of clarity • Increased Anxiety and Rumination (obsession with task completion) • Working Memory Trouble (Why did I come to the staff room again?) • Difficulty Learning New Concepts – (revert to overuse of ‘What You Know’; new course prep a struggle)

  6. What is Teacher Resilience? • Ability to bounce back from adversity • Ability to deal with change and come out in good shape • Also known as ‘Stress Hardiness’

  7. 5 ways teachers can build resilience • Course Correcting • Realistic Optimism • Focus on What’s • Healthy Body = Healthy Mind • Self-Compassion

  8. Resilient Teachers Course Correct • Understand Education’sAcceleration Trap: Loaded system; adopting new initiatives without completing old ones; overload • Recognize upcoming changes and blend their priorities with current teaching practices • Know that course correcting includes adjusting their energy throughout the day - restroom, snacks, sitting, talking to adults, closing their door if necessary, going for a walk

  9. You can’t stay in high gear all year • What strategies do you use to shift gears? • Is there anyone in your school that you believe does a good job at shifting? What do they do?

  10. Resilient Teachers useRealistic Optimism • They don’t dwell on bad news – on purpose, they shift to possibilities and solutions • They Consider THEIR contribution to problems • They celebrate small wins – what’s going right? • Staff meetings, morning announcements • They make decisions based on their values and priorities; they are not dragged down or around by the events of the day • They are careful where their daily energy goes, using their strengths to flourish

  11. Name 2 things that are going RIGHT in your world

  12. The “Power Pose”

  13. Resilient TeachersFocus on What’s Key • Consider their purpose (their ‘WHY’) in making the sacrifices to being a resilient teacher • Plan their days around these educational and self-care priorities • Control what they can, and let go of the rest • Know how to jump off the ‘crazy train’ by exiting ‘complaining stations’, finding calm, not doing the ’drama thing’, 4-7-8 • Ensure you are a professional, day in, day out

  14. Wat is the benefit of you being more resilient at work?

  15. My Why’s

  16. Resilient Teachers know:Healthy Body = Healthy Mind • Know that their mindset and attitude affects their health • Know they need to take care of the ‘temple’ – even if it means putting others second • Recognize when it’s time to try new things and develop new habits – always tweaking, learning, growing stronger • Set boundaries to protect their energy • Plan for the next day the night before

  17. How do you unhook from work? ”Workaholism is not so much about the amount of work, but about the outsized role it takes in your own sense of self. You become a prisoner of your own story. The sacrificing hero.”

  18. Resilient Teachers useSelf-Compassion • Feed the ‘inner supporter’ rather than the ‘inner critic’ • Offer themselves (and others) kindness – benefit of the doubt, acknowledge good intentions • Practice unhooking from negative thoughts and exiting from the downward spiral of guilt • Develop self-talk phrases or sentences to console themselves when things get tough

  19. Compassion Self Talk • “You are big enough to hold this” • ”No matter what happens, you will make it through” • ”If it won’t matter in 5 years, it only gets 5 minutes.” • What’s your Compassionate Self Talk?

  20. How do teachers build resilience? • Course Correcting • Realistic Optimism • Focus on What’s Key • Healthy Body = Healthy Mind • Self-Compassion

  21. “She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails.”
