  2. Emmett Till • The only child of Louis and Mamie Till. • African-American boy • Born July 25, 1841 in Chicago, Illinois. • Died August 28,1955 in Money, Massachusetts. • Attended MccoshElementary School • Went by the nickname “Bobo”

  3. -Gifted with L.T. initialed ring before leaving -August 21, 1955- arrival in Money, Mississippi - Went to “Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market”- Flirted with Carolyn Bryant The Path that Led to Murder

  4. A BRUTAL DEATH • Roy Bryant ( Carolyn's husband ) and his half-brother "J. W." Milam • Till was abducted • Multiple other men (black and white) involved • Admitted to killing him in an interview • Believed they were justified in their actions

  5. “Well, what else could we do? He was hopeless. I'm no bully; I never hurt a nigger in my life. I like niggers—in their place—I know how to work 'em. But I just decided it was time a few people got put on notice. As long as I live and can do anything about it, niggers are gonna stay in their place. Niggers ain'tgonna vote where I live. If they did, they'd control the government. They ain'tgonna go to school with my kids. And when a nigger gets close to mentioning sex with a white woman, he's tired o' livin'. I'm likely to kill him. Me and my folks fought for this country, and we got some rights. I stood there in that shed and listened to that nigger throw that poison at me, and I just made up my mind. 'Chicago boy,' I said, 'I'm tired of 'em sending your kind down here to stir up trouble. Goddam you, I'm going to make an example of you—just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand.‘”(J. W.   6. Evidence • Till’s found in the Tallahatchie River. • Was extremely swollen and mutilated • Was nude • Only had on was the ring with the engraved initials L.T. on it

  8. The Meaning Behind the Open Casket • brutality against African Americans • People wanted immediate justice • Aggravated African American people dealing with racial discrimination THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

  9. The Aftermath • Bryant and Milam were considered suspects • Southern newspapers showed strong disapproval of the crime • Northern outrage • Support of the murderers • Roy, Milam, and Carolyn become “famous” • They were found not guilty No one ever did time for this crime .

  10. Was justice served ? Justice was never served. It’s too late. Till’s Case related to Michael brown. Michael brown case took place last month in August. Both show the oppression of minorities in America Michael Brown The Impact On Our World Today: Emmett Till
