Expressionism • Definition: A movement in the art world during the early part of the 20th century that emphasized subjective expression of the artists inner experience. • Abstract Expressionism used more representational shapes and forms as opposed to Expressionism which still used more realistic depiction with an emotional undercurrent.

  11. Summary • Abstract Expressionism gave way to many more revolutionary techniques and genres of art. Expression of emotion in painting has always been relevant but these abstract expressionists took it to another level, using ambiguous shapes and color to create overall feelings.
