What is XML • XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a simplified subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML, ISO 8879) which provides a file format for representing data, a schema for describing data structure, and a mechanism for extending and annotating HTML with semantic information.

XML Advantages and Disadvantages • Disadvantages • No standards • File sizes are very large • Application bridges (API’s) must be rewritten • Advantages • Can be used by small EDI users who don’t have the resources to implement a full blown EDI installation. • Allows for viewing business documents using a browser.

  8. Will XML replace EDI? • NO!

  9. Will XML complement EDI? • YES!

  10. X12 & EDIFACT • The X12 standard is limited to North America • UN/EDIFACT is used in the rest of the world. • GM is moving to EDIFACT • Expect other major players to move to EDIFACT.
