  4. Act 1, Scene 2 • Following his talk with the Prince, Capulet is at peace with idea that he and Montague should start to live at peace with each other. • Relationship between Capulet and Juliet: Earth hath swallow’d all my hopes but she” (line 14) • Capulet consents to the marriage of Paris and Juliet, if she agrees. • Capulet sends out a servant to invite people to his party, but what’s the problem? (lines 38-44) What happens then?

  5. Act 1, Scene 3 • Questions: • What do we learn from the role of the Nurse in lines 8-11? • How old is Juliet? • How many children does the Nurse have? • Lady Capulet describes Paris in lines 80-95. How does Juliet react to her mother’s description? (see lines 98-100)

  6. Act 1, Scene 4 • Benvolio and Mercutio persuade Romeo to join them in gatecrashing the Capulet’s masquerade ball. • Gatecrashing parties, or masquerading, was popular in the late sixteenth century: a gentleman could visit a party to which they had not been invited. The host regarded the arrival of masquers as flattery, not as an intrusion.

  7. Act 1, Scene 5 • Romeo and Juliet see each other for the first time and instantly fall in love. • While Romeo stands in wonder he is observed by Tybalt, who recognises Romeo as being a Montague. Capulet does not want them to fight. • Lines 92-105 – how do Romeo and Juliet divulge their feelings for one another?
