Date and Place • Three letters similar to Gospel of John • In language, tone, vocabulary and “testimony” • Gospel based on testimony of “beloved disciple” and reveals stages of editing • Gospel and three letters share a “Johannine” tradition • Therefore from the same community as the Fourth Gospel • a) Traditional location = Ephesus • b) All written by Greek speakers • Probably from the same author as Fourth Gospel (instructor) • a) No author identified for 1 John • b) Author of 2 & 3 John is "the elder"

  3. 1-3 John • By “John the elder” in 90s • Gospel written 85–90 CE • So the date of the letters: mid to late first century • Three-letter “packet” • Relationship: 2-3 John are probably cover letters for 1 John, making the general particular (instructor) • Occasion: “conflict and schism” in churches AncH 101 Heb - Rev
