  1. Welcome to Honors Chemistry!!! Ms Jonson heather.jonson@ocsarts.net • EarlyBirdWarmup (3 minutes) Become friends with the person(s) next to you. • Discuss your own personal high school chemistry experience with this new friend. Be prepared to share out! • What do you think are the top 10 issues that should be addressed to improve the quality of life, globally – before the middle of this century?

  2. About me: Teaching experience: 6th year OCSA 4 years LAUSD B.S. Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology M. Ed Education

  3. What do I do here at OCSA?(other than the obvious) Science Olympiad Team coach ACSEC Awards Chair AP chemistry teacher

  4. About the class:Chemistry is the study of matter and its interactions. They have already learned about the periodic table, atoms, etc. We will build upon this stuff, do a lot of labs, and add in a splash of math!Your student will think this is the MOST FUN HARDEST Most Challenging class!

  5. “Why study chemistry?” I asked you to identify the top 10 issues that should be addressed to improve the quality of life globally – before the middle of this century. Four out of these 10 are chemistry related and a couple others have scientific connections. Every person on this earth deserves an opportunity to be educated so they can at LEAST somewhat understand these huge issues and the science behind them. Some of my students today will be the scientists (etc) who will work to solve these problems for us!  environment water terrorism/war education democracy population disease food poverty energy

  6. Some Topics Atomic structure and Electron configuration Measurement The Mole and Stoichiometry Nuclear chemistry

  7. How exactly is “honors chemistry” different than “chemistry”? More: • Projects/papers • Readings • MATH • Examples and problems: less repetitive, but more difficult • SAT II prep • Higher standards for responsibility and collaboration Faster pace: • 1 extra unit – electrochemistry • A couple of extra topics per unit Labs: • More frequent and more challenging • Full, typed laboratory reports

  8. Learning Goals Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving • Inquiry labs, strategies, and practicing word problems Data Analysis • Graphing and analyzing data sets Drawing Conclusions • Connecting laboratory work and real-world examples to chemistry concepts learned in class ****Error Analysis***** • “Why did the experiment go wrong? WHY WHYWHY, like EXACTLY? What caused it? What would we do differently next time“ Scientific Writing

  9. Grades Homework Packets (15%) Due on the day of a Unit Test Assignments are on Sharepoint Labs, Projects, Readings (35%) 1 major lab write-up every 3 weeks or so Tests (50%) Every 3 or 4 weeks Review sheet, practice tests, etc on Sharepoint A = 100% - 90.0% B = 89.9% - 80.0% C = 79.9% - 70.0% D = 69.9% - 60.0% F = anything below 59.9%

  10. What can I do to support my kid? • Encouragement to attend block 7 and to be an advocate for him or herself • Allow him/her quiet time and space to do their homework • Allow him/her computer and printer access to complete laboratory reports • Check Aeries so you’re aware of his/her scores and performance • Assist his/her with study group formation (pizza, transportation, etc) • Please share your personal chemistry experience with your student. Chemistry was a struggle for us adults, too!
