Early Texas Inhabitants • Discuss 2 challenges they would have faced that are SIMILAR to those we have today living in TX • Discuss 2 challenges they would have faced that are DIFFERENT to those we have today living in TX • How would the climate and geography have DIRECTLY affected the lives of people in EACH region of Texas 300-500 years ago?

Early Texas Inhabitants • Native Americans settled in TX in bands tens of thousands of years before Europeans arrived • Similarities between tribes: believed in spirits, shamans could summon spirits to help sick, all living creatures connected with Earth • Differences between tribes: language/dialect, creation story, way of life, source of food, etc • How would TX geography impact each way of life?

  4. Southeastern/Gulf Coast Natives • Caddo • Karankawa • Coahuiltecan • Atakapa

  5. The Caddo • lived by East TX’s Red River (near TX/OK border) • over 20 groups organized into larger confederacies (linked by kinship/shared ancestors/history) • matrilineal society • status based social system/organization • passed down in families • political vs spiritual leaders • an elder led each settlement

  6. The Caddo • Corn was food staple, grew 2 crops each year…hunted bison, deer, bear • Traded with tribes from Great Lakes to Gulf, Rockies to Appalachians • Made pottery • In 1859, were relocated to OK, descendants still there today

  7. The Karankawa • Nomads who shared common language • moved when they exhausted the area’s food • typically found in Gulf Coast region/barrier islands • how would they travel over water?

  8. The Karankawa • communicated with fellow bands via smoke signals • a band was a few families led by one chief • first natives of TX to meet Europeans, only survived the next 300 years….why?

  11. The Atakapa • hunter-gatherers • divided into bands: Alligator, Heron, Snake • alligator was source of food, light, tools, even bug repellant! • decimated by European diseases
