  1. What is Research?

  2. Definition • Look up the definition of research. Write it on a piece of paper.

  3. research1: to search or investigate exhaustively <research a problem> • research1: careful or diligent search2: studious inquiry or examination; especially: investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws3: the collecting of information about a particular subject

  4. Research • Research is a process of investigation. An examination of a subject from different points of view. It's not just a trip to the library to pick up a stack of materials, or picking the first five hits from a computer search. Research is a hunt for the truth. It is getting to know a subject by reading up on it, reflecting, playing with the ideas, choosing the areas that interest you and following up on them. Research is the way you educate yourself.

  5. A student going to the library and reading information on African Elephants. Rearranging facts on a topic of interest A student writing a report on behavior of birds. Research originates with a question or a problem. Research requires a clear goal. Research is guided by the specific research problem, question, or hypothesis. Research requires the collection and interpretation of data in attempting to resolve the problem that initiated the research. Report vs. Research

  6. Why? • Write on your paper… • Why do people do research? • Why is it important? • How can it help us?
