  1. 5 Common Wall Tie Types: Which Is Right For Your Home?

  2. Cavity walls have been a prominent feature of UK homes for more than a century now, and are basically comprised of a pair of thin walls, that have an inner and outer leaf separated by a space. Wires made of steel, and otherwise known as remedial wall ties or cavity wall ties, connect the walls together and enable them to work in unison, as one wall. When professionally constructed with adequate wall ties, there’s no reason why a cavity wall can’t be as solid and secure as a regular, solid wall.

  3. Designed to help protect a home from issues with internal damp, make the property heat loss resistant, and sound-proofed, cavity walls secured by wall ties are a mainstay of modern home construction in the UK. With stainless steel cavity wall ties being the ties of choice throughout the construction industry, these last a lot longer than mild steel ties which were used previously, and have less thermal conductivity.

  4. Let’s look at 5 of the most common types of cavity wall ties: 1. Helical Cold-rolled and twisted once they’re in a cruciform shape, helical wall ties are used to secure a building’s outer wall to its interior structure, and they come in a variety of lengths according the width of the cavities. Being relatively quick and simple to fix into place, helical wall ties are able to withstand sufficient loads of tension and compression, and are ideal for use in structures made out of brick, concrete and block. They can also be used to great effect in buildings that require a fire rating by law.

  5. 2. Mechanical These ties are made out of stainless steel and are part-threaded studs with a mechanism that expands on each end. With a number of different sizes available, mechanical wall ties are suitable for use with the majority of commonly used cavity widths. With a small drip-ring made of neoprene set into the center of the bar, mechanical wall ties help to prevent water from making its way across the tie-bar. 3. Resin-fix Made out of stainless steel, resin-fix cavity wall ties are great when secured in place to each leaf with a polyester resin bonding agent, or other such brick adhesives, and create a strong bond. If a property has aging brickwork that isn’t in a great condition, then resin-fix wall ties are an ideal solution for any wall tie replacement work.

  6. 4. Resin grouted Designed with the purpose of re-tying cavity walls wherein a resin fix at both ends is required, resin grouted wall ties are securely placed inside pilot holes that have already been filled with resin. Once the resin has set, both leaves (the inner and outer), are securely bonded and the cavity walls are stable and structurally sound again. 5. Remedial wall ties When the failure of wall ties became widespread back in 1980s England, and such a thing as a cavity wall tie inspection came into play, remedial wall ties were used to secure existing wall tie systems that had corroded or been compromised in some way over the years.

  7. In terms of knowing which type of wall tie system is best for your home, this decision is best left in the capable hands of a specialist, but if you want to find out whether your cavity walls have been compromised by faulty or damaged wall ties, you should schedule a cavity wall tie inspection at the earliest.
