  3. Biographical Background of Mark • Mark’s real name is John Mark • He was a kinsman of Barnabas • When christened, he was the godson of Saint Peter the Apostle • Became a priest • The symbol for Marks gospel is a winged lion

  4. When was Mark’s gospel written? • Mark’s gospel was written sometime between AD 65 and 70. • This is important because during this time there was a Jewish Revolt against Rome (AD 66-70).

  5. Who was Mark’s gospel written to? Why? • Mark’s audience for this Gospel was Gentile Christians who were suffering from persecution for their beliefs in Jesus. • It could be that the Gospel was written in Rome sometime shortly after Nero’s persecution of the Christians there in AD 64-65 • It was during this persecution that Peter was likely martyred.

  6. What image does Mark’s gospel portray of Jesus? • Mark portrays Jesus in action and urgent action at that.  In the first chapter alone we can sense the urgency and immediacy of Jesus' work and mission.

  7. What is the meaning of the symbolic image in Mark? • Mark's symbol in art is a Lion, usually winged. In the book of Revelation, the visionary sees about the throne of God four winged creatures: a lion, an ox, a man, and an eagle. • It has customarily been supposed that these represent the four Gospels, or the four Evangelists

  8. What makes Mark’s gospel unique/distinct from the others? • Unlike both Matthew and Luke, Mark does not offer any information about the life of Jesus before his baptism and ministry. • Mark is the only gospel that has Jesus explicitly admit that he does not know when the end of the world will be • Mark is the only gospel where Jesus himself is a carpenter

  9. Sample passage from Mark that are an example of its unique purpose or character. • Mark 6:3 "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.
