  2. Feminism • Belief that men and women should be equal = politically, economically, and socially

  3. World War II • Many women went to work to fill needed positions during war • War ended = jobs for women ended • Most returned home to raise family

  4. Women’s Movement Reawakens • Many were resentful of advertisements • refused memberships at clubs, credit at banks, and paid less for same job • Not allowed in finance, law, medicine • 1960’s = 3/4 worked in clerical, sales, or factories

  5. Workplace Rights • 2 forces helped women’s rights • A. Mass protests • B. Government (Headed by Eleanor Roosevelt) • 1963 - Equal Pay Act - made it illegal to pay men more for the same job

  6. 1964 Civil Rights Act • Also included women • Title VII section outlawed discrimination - race, color, religion, national origin • Created the “EEOO” - Equal Employment Opportunity Commission -

  7. Betty Friedan • The Feminist Mystique • Traveled country interviewing women with college degrees • found most enjoyed their life but were missing something • Most women related / started movement

  8. N.O.W • National Organization for Women - or - NOW • Bring Women to mainstream of American society • demanded greater educational and work opportunities • Wanted govt to enforce civil rights for women

  9. Equality in Education • Title IX - prohibits federally funded schools from discriminating girls in all aspects of its operation • many schools implemented the law - Women had Fed. law on their side

  10. Abortion & Roe v. Wade • After mid 1800’s abortion was outlawed except in cases to save mother’s life • Women who had abortions faced criminal charges • 1960’s - law changed to include victim of rape, incest

  11. Roe v. Wade • Supreme Ct. ruled: • 1st 3 month - women’s choice • 2nd 3 months - states could regulate abortions on mothers health basis • Final 3 mo. - Abortion only allowed in medical emergency

  12. Impact of Women’s Movement • Women working was finally accepted • 1970’s More women in workforce and college • Income gap still exists • By the year 2000 - 1/4 of nations Doctors and lawyers • by 2000 - 40% of college graduates
