  1. “A & P” Outline Monday, November 29th

  2. Today, I will read a given text, identify a theme, and provide support from the text by selecting relevant quotes and explaining how each relates to the theme (6.c).

  3. Warm Up • In your own words, explain the following terms in relation to completing an outline: • Introduce • Cite • Explain

  4. I- introduce • What is happening in the story before the quote you selected? Briefly describe all relevant information. • C – cite • Select a quote DIRECTLY from the text • Remember to include page numbers! • E – explain • Connect the quote (citation) to the main point. • Explain how it relates to the point.

  5. Select a Thesis • The story depicts a boy who quits his job in hopes of gaining the attention of girls in A & P. • Is this action foolish or noble? You decide…

  6. Foolish • In the story “A & P” by John Updike, Sammy’s quitting depicts a foolish act through his thoughts, actions, and words.

  7. Noble • In the story “A & P” by John Updike, Sammy’s quitting depicts a noble act through his thoughts, actions, and words.

  8. Topic Sentences • The first sentence of each paragraph is a preview of what you will talk about in the paragraph. • It should include the phrasing from your thesis statement.

  9. Step 1: Fill in the Topic Sentence • Part A: Thoughts • The thoughts of Sammy depict the [foolishness/nobleness] of his act of quitting. • Part B: Actions • Part C: Words Try these two on your own.

  10. Step 2: Find Appropriate Quotes • Look through the quote bank for “A & P” and select quotes that fit with your thesis. • If you argue that Sammy acts in a foolish way, find quotes that show it is foolish. • If you argue that Sammy acts in a noble way, find quotes that show it is noble.

  11. Step 2: Find Appropriate Quotes • Part A- Thoughts • Write them under CITE (a) • “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). • Your choice 

  12. Step 3: Introduce the Quote • Part A- Thoughts • Introduce: What is happening in the story before this quote? • Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

  13. Step 3: Introduce the Quote • Part A – Thoughts • Introduce: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon. • Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

  14. Step 4: Explain the Quote • Part A – Thoughts • Introduce: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon. • Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). Explain how your quote supports your thesis…

  15. Step 4: Explain the Quote Foolish • Part A – Thoughts • Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). • Explain: The narrator notices that the girls in the store are being watched by the butcher. His disconnect from the girls is obvious because he refers to them as a collective group, not by their individual names. This depicts that he does not have a deep connection to the girls and his act of quitting was impulsive and not for the benefit of the girls.

  16. Noble Step 4: Explain the Quote • Part A – Thoughts • Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). • Explain: This emotion shows that Sammy has compassion for the situation the girls are in, and because of this, he feels it necessary to defend them when Lengel makes fun of them. When he quits, he does so in protest for the way the girls have been treated in the store. He takes a stand for the honor of the girls.

  17. At this point, you should have… • Part A – The thoughts of Sammy depict the [foolishness/nobleness] of his act of quitting. • Introduce: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon. • Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). • Explain: (either how it is foolish or noble)

  18. Your turn! • Complete the INTRODUCE and EXPLAIN portion for the second quote you selected. • Once that is completed, begin finding quotes for Part B: Actions. Then, repeat the Introduce and Explain process.

  19. Complete I, C, and E for Part A • Thoughts • Complete I, C, and E for Part B • Actions • Complete I, C, and E for Part C • Words • Begin with finding your quotes- it will be easier to complete once you have your quotes.

  20. “A & P” Outline and Paragraphs Tuesday, November 30th

  21. Today, I will develop main ideas and content fully focused on a prompt with relevant, thorough, and effective support by writing paragraphs developed from my outline (2.g)

  22. In the next 10 minutes… • You should finish your outline. • If you have finished your outline, begin drafting each paragraph.

  23. Incorporating CITE • When writing your paragraph, you MUST incorporate your quote into a grammatically correct sentence. • This is not acceptable: • While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon. “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). The quote cannot be a sentence on its own.

  24. Incorporating CITE • When writing your paragraph, you MUST incorporate your quote into a grammatically correct sentence. • This is acceptable: • While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon. Sammy then thinks to himself, “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3). The quote cannot be a sentence on its own.

  25. Complete the paragraph for Part A • Write out the entire paragraph. Pay attention to how you incorporate your quote. • When you are done, switch paragraphs with an elbow partner. • Did he/she put the quote into a grammatically correct sentence?

  26. Complete Paragraphs for Part B and C • Write out the paragraphs for Part B and Part C independently.
