  2. What is Alcohol? • A psychoactive drug that depresses the central nervous system, dulls the mind, impairs thinking and judgment, lessens coordination, and interferes with the ability to respond quickly to dangerous situations. • Third Leading Cause of death

  3. What is fermentation? • It is a process in which yeast, sugar, and water are combined to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide.

  4. Examples of alcoholic beveragesBeer • Beer- alcoholic beverage made by fermenting barley, corn, and rye. It is about 4 percent alcohol • Malt liquor- beer that has a higher alcohol content than regular beer. • Light beer- beer with fewer calories

  5. Examples of Alcoholic beveragesWine • Wine- an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting grapes or other fruits. Most wines are about 12 to 14 percent alcohol. • Wine cooler- a carbonated fruit flavored alcoholic beverage that is about 1.5 to 6 percent alcohol.

  6. Examples of alcoholic beveragesLiquor • Liquor- an alcoholic beverage that is made by distillation. It is also called distilled spirits and contain about 40 percent alcohol. • Distillation- a process that uses a fermented mixture to obtain an alcoholic beverage with a high alcohol content. • Types of liquor include: Whisky, bourbon, rye, rum, gin, vodka, tequila, and brandy.

  7. Alcohol is a toxin • Toxin- a substance that is poisonous. If too large amounts is swallowed, the stomach will reject it causing a person to vomit. • The body tries to remove alcohol from the body as quickly as possible. But it takes a while for the body to break the alcohol down. • Coffee, Showers, and fresh air DOES NOT break down alcohol. • Alcohol poisoning- body has become poisoned by drinking large amounts of alcohol

Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) • The amount of alcohol in a person’s blood • Factors that Affect BAC • Amount of alcohol consumed- • Speed at which alcohol is consumed • Body size • Percentage body fat • Gender • Feelings • Amount of food eaten • Presence of other drugs in the blood stream • Age • Drinking carbonated beverages

Effects of Alcohol on the body • Nervous system- harms brain, destroy nerve cells, cause black outs and seizures, cause dementia • Digestive system- increases risk of developing cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. Causes ulcers, increases risk of liver disease and alcoholic hepatitis(liver swells), cirrhosis, increases the risk of pancreatitis, malnutrition, and even anemia • Immune system- depresses the function of this system. Increases risk of illnesses in the body, lowers the number of infection fighting cells in the body and decreases the ability of these cells to fight pathogens. • Cardiovascular System- damages organs, increases risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and stroke, increases risk of cardiomyopathy(heart muscles weaken, blood don’t pump effectively. Cause a loss of body heat causing frost bite or hypothermia in cold weather.

Effects of the body continued Skeletal System- alcohol causes the body to loose calcium resulting in osteoporosis Urinary system- increases urine flow, can cause kidney failure Reproductive system- in females in can delay menstrual cycle, cause irregular periods, and impair breast development. In males, it decreases the size of reproduction parts, can delay the age at which the voice deepens and reduce the amount of facial and body hair.

  13. Effects of drinking during pregnancy • Causes miscarriage and still birth • Causes baby to be a low birth rate infant • Can result in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)

Effects of alcohol on Thinking and decision making • Wrong decisions • False sense of self-confidence • Impaired judgment • Feelings of invincibility • Giving in to negative peer pressure • Intensified sexual feelings and impaired reasoning • Impaired reaction time and coordination • Aggressive behavior • Intensifies emotions • Hangovers • Blackouts • Violence-Alcohol more than ANY other drugs has been linked to violence • Domestic violence • Rape • Suicide • Lawbreaking • Violating School policies

  15. What is alcoholism? A disease in which there is physical and psychological dependence on alcohol It causes family dysfunction and relationship difficulties, Change in personality, Denial, neglect and injuries to family members

  18. Teens Ask" Why shouldn't I drink?" • Answers: • The punishment is severe. • You can look really stupid • Alcohol puts your health at risk

  19. Alcohol Advertisement • Alcohol is advertised in many different ways. One of the main ways it is advertised is through media. Movies and commercials on television promote drinking. Alcohol is advertised more that tobacco has been on the media. • Billboards • Internet
