Disability Pensions • Two types of disability: service connected and non-service connected • Non-Service Connected- an injury or illness obtained that is unconnected with the job, but impairs an employee’s capability of performing his/her duties • Service Connected- an injury or illness obtained while performing the duties associated with his/her job

Disability Pensions Cont. • Employees on disability continue to accumulate service credits that count towards a service retirement pension at age 65 (Civilian Only) • Disability Pensions depend on the Union, type of disability, and years of Service • There are 8 unions in the city of Omaha (4 civilian, 2 fire, and 2 police)

  4. Calculating Disability Pensions • There are 8 different Unions in Omaha • 4 Civilian • Civilian Bargaining (Nebraska Public Employees, Local 251), Functional Employee Group, Administrative and Executive (AEC), and Civilian Management, Professional and Technical Employees Council (CMPTEC) • 2 Police • Police Bargaining (Omaha Police Officers Association) and Police Management • 2 Fire • Fire Bargaining (Professional Fire Fighters Association of Omaha, Local 385) and Fire Management

  5. Civilian Unions (COERS) • 60% of regular pay and longevity pay less any Social Security disability and/or Workers’ Compensation benefits • Non-Service Connected • Must have service credit of five years • Service Connected • Must have service credit of 6 months

  6. COERS ADJUSTMENTS • Service Connected Disability • 100% reduction for Workers Compensation • 100% reduction for Social Security Disability • Non-Service Connected Disability • 100% reduction for Workers Compensation (TBD) • 100% reduction for Social Security Disability

  11. COPFRS Worker’s Compensation Adjustments • Service-connected disability retirements shall be reduced by a portion of any worker’s compensation benefits paid to the retiree. • There are no adjustments for Social Security Disability

  12. COPFRS Worker’s Compensation Adjustments • [(% of the City’s contribution to the pension system) ÷ (the % of total contribution by both the City and retiree to the pension system)] X (the monthly worker's compensation benefit paid to the retiree) • Example: City Contribution=18.755%; Total Contribution=31.895%; Pension=$1000; • 18.755% ÷ 31.895%= 59% • 59% X 1000= $590 reduction
