  1. Study Skills: Remembering

  2. Four different techniques • Categorization • Loci Method • Mnemonic Devices • Flash Cards

  3. Activity • Look at these words for 45 seconds: apple box cat dragon elephant flag golf hand Indian jail king lasso monkey needle onion piano quarter ring snake tree underwear violin wig x-ray yo-yo     zebra

  4. You have 30 seconds to write down as many of the words from the previous slide that you can recall from memory. • Go! • Count the number of words that you were able to recall. We will come back to this activity

  5. How to use the Categorization technique • 1. Look at your material and determine which items are similar and which items are different • 2. Organize the items into categories • 3. Review the items by categories and note the number of items in each category • 4. Recall the number of categories, the names of the categories, and how many items are in each category • 5. Go through each category and recall each item associated with the category name • 6. Repeat until you have it down

  6. Loci Method • This method requires visualization and works best with information that you have to remember in order. • For instance, if you were trying to remember a section of the periodic table you could imagine the seats in your classroom as elements. • By visually placing the elements in the order of the chairs, you will be better able to remember the correct order.

  7. Mnemonic Devices • This method is particularly helpful in remembering short lists. A Mnemonic Device helps you to associate a word or a sentence with another word or sentence. • Examples: The clockwise order of a compass (North, East, South, West) Never Eat Shredded Wheat or the colors of a rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) Roy G. Biv

  8. Flash Cards • Flash cards are a simple way to help you to remember information. • 1. Write word or questions on one side of the card and the word meaning or answer to the question on the other side of the card • 2. Flip through the flash cards and quiz yourself by remembering what is on the other side of the card • 3. Turn them over and flip through them the other way to see if you can recall the answer • 4. Weed out or discard the cards that you know • 5. Repeat the process until you know all of the information that is on the cards

  9. Now use the categorization technique to remember the list • Get in groups and come up with different categories and place the items in the categories that make sense. apple box cat dragon elephant flag golf hand Indian jail king lasso monkey needle onion piano quarter ring snake tree underwear violin wig x-ray yo-yo     zebra   • Examples of categories: animals, words with an i, words with hyphens

  10. Now write down as many of the words that you can recall without out reading them • Did the categorization technique help? • Did you come up with some original categories
