Before discussing milk substitutes, let us briefly understand the medical conditions where a milk substitute serves a great purpose for nutrient supplementation. While milk allergy is related to reaction of the body to the milk protein, most likely casein, lactose intolerance is the intolerance of the body to milk sugar lactose. In the case of lactose intolerance, the problem is countered by simply adding the sugar-digesting enzyme or eating fermented dairy products like ice-creams, butter, and soft cheese. 2. The simplest signs of milk allergy get induced even when a person takes a small amount of milk protein in any form. The symptoms include vomiting, abdominal discomfort or pain, diarrhea, rashes and runny nose. The easiest alternative to cow’s milk is goat’s milk. It can serve as a good choice but it is highly folate deficient. Moreover, it is unpasteurized and thus poses a serious risk to health. 3. Soy Milk: This is one of the most popular non-dairy product available in the market. It contains the same amount of protein as milk. However, it contains twice the amount of sugar and fats. Due to the fat content, enriched soy milk can be a rich source of Vitamin D. Almond Milk: Almond milk is produced by grinding almonds and water followed by straining the water from the pulp. The method is very simple and can be easily performed at home. The advantage of almond milk lies in the fact that it does not contain a lot of fats or calories. Thus, it is also a calorie-free nutrient rich substitute. Qualified, Expert Advice: - www.nutrition4kids.com
