  3. Teaching Objectives • Practice reading, writing, listening and talking about responsibility; • Discuss about the essence of responsibility and that of human nature.

  4. Pre-reading Questions • What would you feel and do if you were one of the survivors of a shipwreck ? • What is your responsibility as a student? Do you think the awareness of one’s responsibility for other people is a sign of maturity? • What do you think is human nature?

  5. Global Reading • What type of writing is the text? Is it a piece of narration, argumentation, description or explanation? • Can you describe the conditions of the crew members after they have drifted on the sea for twenty day? • What would you do if you were in Jeff’s position?

  7. Paragraphs 1-2 Questions: · Why did Snyder keep his gun pointed at the other nine men? · Why did Jeff Barrett call Snyder a “dope”?

  8. Language work: · keep sb covered: keep sb under control · at close quarters: very near e.g. The witness didn‘t see the man at close quarters. 证人没有在近处看到过那个人。
