  2. The purpose of this EPICS upgrade is to establish the framework to maintain currency with EPICS, Solaris, and other computing resources. • Use slide from peer review • EPICS System Software. • Solaris Operating System. • The ‘desktop’ will use CDE not OpenWindows.

  4. ‘CDE’(Common Desktop Environment) • Replaces Sun’s outgoing OpenWindows. • The Control Panel • Multiple Desktops. • NSTX Subpanel. • Icons • Desktop Action icons. • Minimized-window icons. • ‘icon-collection’ window available, or, Center mouse button reveals entire path and display name. • Display Lock. • CDE can be customized.

Using EPICS • When logging in to use EPICS, user’s should choose host epicsrv, not epicsrv1 or epicsrv2. • Starting applications: • Double-poke a desktop Action icon. • Single-poke a Control Panel’s ‘NSTX’ sub-panel icon. • ‘Type’ in a ‘terminal’ window. • If the x-terminal is not behaving normally: • Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot an x-terminal.

EPICS Display Manager ‘medm’ • Launch main display CE00 using the ‘EPICS’ icon. • Windows resizing - Cannot simply drag at corner. • Poke right mouse botton in ‘top border’ of window to bring up window options. • Poke ‘Size’ selection using left mouse button. • Release buttons. Move mouse beyond current borders to stretch window. • poke left mouse when size is correct. • Medm Printing: Use the right mouse button anywhere in the display to bring up menu … drag and release over ‘print’.

  10. medm, cont’d • Related Display shortcuts: • Buttons. • Menu - left mouse-poke, drag to selection, release. • Original window usually lives. • From within a medm display, use the ‘!’ Script Control menu to start other EPICS functions: • gnuPlot, and gnuPlot printing • StripTool • Historical Trend Viewer • Alarm Handler

  11. NSTX Trouble Report • New system to electronically submit and respond to NSTX Trouble Reports (TR). • Launch TR GUI using ‘Trouble_Report” icon. • GUI is www browser. • VERY slow Netscape startup (~ 45 seconds). • Investigating alternate www browser.

  12. NSTX Trouble Report (cont’d) • Anyone can view the TR database, from anywhere at PPPL. • Anyone can generate a TR. • Only COE can close out TR’s. • Software administered by Subir Sengupta (ssengupta@pppl.gov).
