  1. Bonjour! Quick! In your journal, tell me what “pure” means. Now, tell me what that has to do with the PURITANS who came over to America from England.

  2. The Puritans • Time period – 16th-17th century • Where – England, and then the US • Important things to know – Puritans are often thought of as “sticklers” to strict religious codes and morality.

  3. The Puritan Migration • Puritans left England in great numbers between 1620 – 1640. • The king of England, Charles I, made matters worse for Puritans and refused to allow them religious freedom. So, they left.

  4. Puritans, their beliefs, and their relationship with Native Americans • Humans born sinful b/c of Adam’s original sin. • Cannot, through our own lives, escape our own sin. • Elected by God to be saved if we can live a Godly life. • Only those who are saved can be committed to heaven. • Puritans must never stop living lives of grace and purity. • Puritans and Native Americans • Best case scenario: They are savages who need Puritans to teach them about religion and morality. • Worst case scenario: They are savages who must be exiled or killed, as their lifestyle is too dangerous. Often, they were considered a physical representation of Satan.

  5. Their writings • Typically, Puritans ONLY wrote about God/religion. • Atypically, Puritans wrote about secular topics that in turn glorified God.
