Losing Weight With Gastric Sleeve Surgery.

Sleeve surgery started in India around 2005 or so. It was very well accepted by both patients & surgeons. Gastric sleeve is a surgery done only on the stomach while the rest of the digestive system (intestines) is not altered. It is not a mal-absorptive procedure and is considered a simpler procedure for patients with excellent weight loss results.<br>

  1. Losing Weight With Gastric Sleeve Surgery Bariatric surgery started in India in 1998 and initial procedures included Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) and Gastric band surgeries. Weight loss results were not consistent with these surgeries. On the other hand, some young patients were not comfortable undergoing Gastric bypass surgery. Sleeve surgery started in India around 2005 or so. It was very well accepted by both patients & surgeons. Gastric sleeve is a surgery done only on the stomach while the rest of the digestive system (intestines) is not altered. It is not a mal- absorptive procedure and is considered a simpler procedure for patients with excellent weight loss results. At the Centre for Metabolic surgery, patients have lost over 90% excess weight & some have even reached their ideal weight after gastric sleeve surgery. Sleeve surgery in India could bring down the cost of bariatric surgery. As it is technically less demanding for the surgeon, a large number of surgeons were interested in bariatric surgery and thus Gastric sleeve surgery became common weight loss procedure. Bariatric surgery not only helps with managing weight but also reduced and in some cases even reverses the risks and effects of health issues related to obesity like hypertension, cardiovascular complications, type 2 diabetes and more. In such cases, Sleeve Surgery can be a life saviour.

  2. Being cleared for bariatric surgery requires excessive scanning and following a rigorous diet and exercise plan. It takes months of preparation including lifestyle changes and counselling for mental preparation of the same. The surgery can even be cancelled or postponed if a patient gains weight during this preparatory period. Patients are monitored closely after surgery with scheduled appointments, in order to track progress. Gastric sleeve surgery involves the reduction of the stomach’s size by about 80%, this reduces the patient’s food intake and thus helps reduce weight by reducing the number of calories consumed. All in all, it can be safely said that Sleeve Gastrectomy brought a revolution in managing obesity (the current Indian BMI criterion for suitability is above 30).
