  2. For over three decades of ministry, I’ve been privileged to be a pastor to many individuals with physical impairments or chronic illnesses. Their determination and spiritual devotion has profoundly impacted my life. They have truly helped me become a better pastor and to serve Jesus better. But I have an embarrassing confession to make. During the early years of my ministry, I felt uncomfortable and awkward around people with obvious physical needs. I was afraid of misspeaking or unintentionally doing something that offended the person rather than helped. One day I finally sought the counsel of a godly older pastor concerning my anxiety, and his advice was priceless. “Dean,” he said. “You’ve got to see people as Jesus sees them. Start looking at every person with your heart and not just with your eyes.” After I wrote these opening paragraphs, I paused and wondered how many readers might identify with my early struggle to connect with wounded and broken individuals. If you’re one of those readers, you can find divine counsel in this lesson’s Scripture that will help you see people as Jesus sees them and take bold actions to bless them in Jesus’ name.
