  1. LMC 08 April 2009Consolidations related to pressure protection on DFBs and DSLs Perin, TE-CRG

  2. Pressure relief devices to be installed on DFBs and DSLs L. Tavian

  3. Pressure relief for the DFBM / DFBA LCM links Interface to Quadrupole 1 x DN100 1 x DN200 Busbar interconnection • 1 x DN 200 valve on interconnection sleeve • relief of DFBM box: 1 x DN100 valve • special cases: DFBMH & DFBMD, DFBAD, DFBAC/O

  4. Pressure relief device DFBM / DFBA LCM link 1 x DN200 Cross section of BB duct: 23 cm2 Cross section of link with spacers: approx. 80 cm2 Pipe int diameter 213 mm Link with spacer Spacers Hydraulic plug Pipe diam 54 mm Busbar interconnection Spacers MCI: 4.5 K, DP = 1.3 bar, Mass flow (MCI): 10 kg/s @ 4.5 K

  5. Pressure relief for the DFBM / DFBA LCM links: "standard" and special cases DFBMD/H link (4) "standard" DFBM link (19) DFBAC/O/D links (3+3)

  6. Practical implementation • Reuse existing flanges / springs • DN 200 : same as the ones installed on the dipoles • DN 100 : same as used on the rest of LHC (ISO K + springs) • Installation on the link • rectangular cut in the interconnecion sleeve • saddle "patch" with DN200 port welded onto the interconnection sleeve. Validated on prototype. • Helium discharge direction • for DN100 on DFBM CL module: horizontal discharge will need a deflector. Installation of elbow is impractical and would require demounting of the service chimney. • for DN200: two possibilities (see next slide): short duct with deflector Relief valve installed on link of DFBMM.5L6

  7. Pressure relief for the DFBM / DFBA LCM "standard" links Short duct + deflector Long duct DN100 valve DN100 valve Deflector for DN100 valve Deflector for DN100 valve Deflector for DN200 valve DN200 valve DN200 valve Preferred solution

  8. Pressure relief devices for a DFBA Low current module (LCM) 1 x DN200 High current module (HCM) 1 x DN100 4 x DN230 HCM - LCM Interconnection SHM-HCM Interconnection Shuffling module (SHM) Prototype valve under test

  9. Deflectors in front of the relief valves • Objective: avoid jet of cold helium below approx. 1.5m from ground With deflector 200 mm 1500 mm 75 mm 400 mm

  10. Work distribution: work on the vacuum tanks for equipment at atm. pressure

  11. Work distribution: work on deflectors and supports

  12. Estimation of durations for work on cryostats
