  2. Reconciling Social Change Canadians today are graced with profound changes, which are causing frustration and conflict. As a society we are faced with many difficult choices. In medicine, for example, the ability of technology to prolong life beyond what was possible traditionally has created some serious issues for society to resolve. Organ transplants Experimental or banned drugs Living wills Assisted suicide

  3. Does society have the right to override the wishes of the patient?

  4. How are decisions to be made for people who are unable to make decisions for themselves?

  5. Many of the technological advancements in medicine have occurred over a relatively short period of time. Society, in general, has marvelled at new life-saving and life-prolonging procedures, but has not recognized that these advancements represent change, and that change has consequences
