  1. Types of Governments Past and present forms of governments around the world.

  2. Part I. Definitions • On your worksheet, copy down the title, definition and examples for each slide. • The worksheet will be necessary for the second part of the assignment AND will be turned in for a grade.

  3. Government • Definition: the political direction and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states.

  4. Citizenship • Definition: the status of a citizen, or members of a country, with all its duties, rights, and privileges.

  5. 1. Democracy • Definition: Government by the people; the supreme power is vested in the people. • Examples: Greece, Iraq and United States (strong traditions)

  7. 3. Aristocracy • Definition: rule by the wealthy or noble class. • Examples: Greece (Athens)

  8. 4. Autocracy • Definition: unlimited authority, power, or influence of one person in any group. • Examples: Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan

  9. 5. Monarchy • Definition: supreme power or sovereignty held by a single person, usually inherited. • Examples: Britain(United Kingdom), Saudi Arabia and Swaziland

  10. 6. Oligarchy • Definition: Rule by a few people. • Example: China

  11. 7. Republic • Definition: system of government in which people elect representatives to govern them; also know as a representative government. • Examples: Rome, France, Egypt and United States.

  12. 8. Dictatorship/Tyranny • Definition: rule by one person or group that has absolute power which is rarely passed down through generations. • Examples: North Korea

  13. 9. Communism Definition:elimination of private property, a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed. Examples: Vietnam, China and Cuba

  14. Part II. Locate and Label • On your map, create a Map Key for each of the 9 types of governments listed in your notes. Each government will have a specific color. • Locate and label the countries listed in your notes. • Color the country according to the corresponding color in your Map Key and label the country. • Some countries will have MORE THAN ONE COLOR!
