GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS • Genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural processes. • Typically genes are added to a plant’s DNA, which produce proteins conferring beneficial traits, such as herbicide tolerance (Round Up Ready) or insect protection (Bt) to the crop. • Lot’s of propaganda out there!

CLIMATE CHANGE • Climate change is considered by many scientists to be the most serious threat facing the world today. • The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. • Solutions include phasing out coal plants, expanding renewable energy sources and public transit, and creating new efficiency standards for vehicles and buildings.

  20. HIV/AIDS PANDEMIC • World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized on December 1, 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history. • Scientists my have found a weakness in the virus!!

  21. R.I.P. “PLANET” PLUTO • Science is not a collection of facts. It is an ongoing process that attempts to remain in step with the latest research. That is why scientists sometimes change their minds!
