  4. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition Transformed by Imagination: Designing the Ecology of Student Wellness in Post-Secondary Education wellnessn. the state of being well or in good health (Barber 1650). • Adapting to student life at OCAD University can be both a challenging and exciting experience for each student. Achieving a sense of wellness while balancing the demands of your studies with your personal responsibilities or needs is difficult and sometimes impossible. While the curriculum may ask you to consider the “health and wellness” of other people when you design your objects, environments and communication strategies, this competition challenges you to consider ways of promoting “wellness” in your immediate environment: OCAD U. Consider the halls in which you walk and talk… the ways in which you navigate your education… and imagine designing for the ecology of student wellness at OCAD U. • The “Six Dimensions of Wellness” refer to the Occupational, Physical, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual and Emotional aspects of a person’s life (“Six Dimensions of Wellness”). The following descriptions outline the ways in which wellness could be experienced by a post-secondary student:

  5. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY Occupational: the ability to gain personal satisfaction through the project work performed, understanding its meaning in the larger scope of this journey of learning. Physical: the ability to learn in a studio-based environment, where using both fine and gross motor skill is a necessity that imposes its own rigor on the body. Social: the ability to maintain regular social interactions, receiving and giving friendship and benefiting from the support of his/her peer group. Intellectual: the ability to perform at his/her highest creative potential, use all available resources, continually expanding skills and knowledge, and actively seeking new opportunities to develop. Spiritual: the ability to act from wisdom, make sound decisions, have a deep appreciation of all natural forces, understanding the value of the hidden and intangible qualities of objects and spaces. Emotional: the ability to cope with stress, to understand criticism and praise, and be able to absorb with joy new learning every day.

  6. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY SECTION 2: THE PROJECT www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition The Task: To design tools, methods, communication, spaces or objects that will achieve and promote a balance between the Occupational, Physical, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, or Emotional “Dimension of Wellness” for OCAD U students. The design outcome must improve student performance and overall well-being.

  7. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY SECTION 2: THE PROJECT www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition The Inspiration: Students are to research “The Six Dimensions of Wellness”, and examples of initiatives that address wellness, and apply these principles to the context of the OCAD U environment and experience. An example of a student-led initiative that addresses the Physical, Social and Emotional aspects of students’ wellness are the food-based programs run by the OCAD U Student Union. The “free lunch,” “food bank,” and “food share” programs were inspired by the need to provide students with affordable and healthy food in a community setting. By creating opportunities for students to gather or attain wholesome food, these initiatives promote student performance and overall well-being. A University-led example of the application of wellness is the development of the Health and Wellness Centre which offers a range of medical and counseling services “responsive to issues relating to gender, race, age, culture, abilities, sexual orientation, income and faith” (“OCAD U Health and Wellness Centre”).

  8. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY • SECTION 2: THE PROJECT • The Requirements: • Select two or more of the Dimensions of Wellness to address. • Use the following three questions developed by The National Wellness Institute to determine how your project addresses wellness (“The Six Dimensions of Wellness”): • Does this help people achieve their full potential? • Does this recognize and address the whole person (multi-dimensional approach)? • Does this affirm and mobilize peoples' positive qualities and strengths? • Design tools, methods, communication, spaces or objects that will achieve and promote a balance between the Occupational, Physical, Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Professional and Intellectual Dimensions of Wellness for OCAD U students.

  9. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY SECTION 2: THE PROJECT Awards: 1st Place - $2000 Team Prize 2nd Place - $1000 Team Prize 3rd Place - $500 Team Prize Honourable Mentions as recommended by the Jury.

The design outcome must improve student performance and overall well-being. All student responses will be considered in the context of the following Faculty of Design Mission Statement and OCAD U’s Statement of Diversity and Equity. Faculty of Design: Design and Humanity – Mission Statement: The goal of Design and Humanity is to create objects, communications, environments and experiences that nurture community, humanize technology, satisfy human needs and empower the individual. Design and Humanity strives to achieve the maximum quality of experience for people for each ecological unit consumed in its creation, production and use.

  31. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY OCAD U Statement of Diversity and Equity: OCAD University embraces the notion that excellence flourishes in inclusive environments. The university is committed to practices that value diversity and equity, and embrace the broadest range of human experiences. It is also committed to achieving a community that is free of discrimination, striving to eliminate the adverse effects of any barriers to full participation in campus life. OCAD University encourages outreach activities that build partnerships in creative ways for cross-cultural, international and trans-disciplinary experiences for its students, faculty, staff and guests. Responsibility for ensuring that the values expressed in this Statement of Diversity and Equity thrive rests within the scope of every person’s role in the university.

  32. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY • Jury Considerations may include: • Does the proposal use the “Dimensions of Wellness”? • Does the proposal comply with the Research Ethics Board guidelines? • Is the proposal likely to improve well-being within the university community? • Is the proposed solution clearly and comprehensively communicated? • Does the solution proposed excite? • Is the proposed solution creative and unique?  • Does the design push the envelope of what design can achieve by influencing social change? • Is implementation of the solution feasible?  • Does success rely more on creativity than massive funding? • Is there both quality and craft within the execution of the submission?

  33. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY • SECTION 7: CHECKLIST • www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition • A/ Before submitting, review the jury criteria to ensure a successful proposal. In summary, is the proposed solution a creative and well-crafted execution, underpinned by a well-researched, well-reasoned argument? • B/ Review ‘Deliverables’ for completion of the required work. • C/ Checklist for installation of work: • Work must be mounted within designated area in the Great Hall. • Work hung to museum standards (centre of wall work should measure 56” from the floor). Use a level to ensure a pristine installation. • Each Team should bring a tool kit which should include a pencil, hammer, hardware required, tape measure, etc. and a rough plan of installation.

  34. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY • SECTION 7: CHECKLIST • www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition • Plinths and display devices responsibility of individual teams. • No double sided tape, foam tape or adhesive Velcro tabs. Must adhere to guidelines from Exhibition Services. Respect the walls – use the thinnest nails/screws possible or push pins. An electric drill may be signed out from the tool crib on level one. • Electronic devices must be locked down. Borrowing equipment for two weeks from AV might be an unrealistic plan. • Extension cords and cords to electronic devices have to be taped down with duct tape. • Make sure spelling and grammar are scrutinized by another person before the final printing is done. If the grammar and spelling impedes the meaning of the concept, the Design Competition committee will remove the material.

  35. Ecology of Student WellnessFALL 2013 FACULTY OF DESIGN COMPETITION OCAD UNIVERSITY • SECTION 7: CHECKLIST • www.ocadu.ca/designcompetition • Plinths and display devices responsibility of individual teams. • Make an extra copy of the concept statement for the Design Office. • Back up your work and keep your roughs. • The Faculty of Design Office MAY keep the posters and other materials from the Winners and Honourable Mention teams for possible future venues.
