  2. I. The Colonial Period  A. The Great English Migration • Included the Puritans’ immigration to New England region in the 1630s to escape political, economic, and social issues they faced in England B. Migration to the Appalachia  • The Proclamation of 1763 prevented colonists from crossing the set boarder in an attempt to prevent conflicts with Indians

  3. II. The Early 19th C. (1800-1850) Immigration: • The Irish fled the devastating effects of the potato famine  • The Germans fled political turmoil in their homeland ^ Nativism became a problem in America, as discrimination against immigrants increased. The Know Nothing Party: America’s first nativist political party

  4. III. The Late 19th C. and Early 20th C. Nativism grew as a response to the growing number of immigrants because of differences in religion, language, and culture, and because of competition for jobs. 1880s • The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 • reflected anti-immigrant sentiment in California • first U.S. law to exclude a because of ethnic background • The National Origins Act of 1924 • restricted immigration from southern and eastern Europe • favored immigration from northern and western Europe

  5. IV. The Great Migration of African Americans • African Americans migrated north to escape the systematic discrimination of the rural South beginning during WWI and continuing throughout WWII.

  6. V. Immigration from Mexico Reasons to immigrate: • They could take advantage of the better job opportunities the U.S. offers. • They could reunite with family members who had previously immigrated to the United States. Mexicans immigrated to the U.S. to escape their crowded homeland.

  7. VI. Population Shifts After WWII  A. From cities to suburbs (1950s) ^ B. From North to South (1970s-present) • Largest growth in population occurred below the 37th parallel C. Immigration from Latin America and Asia (last 25 years) ^
