  1. Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy • Alternative energy sources: • Vegetable oil • Rice bran • Nonmolassed beet pulp • Some research shows improvement when fat is added even if starch & sugar are low

  2. Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy • Problem with adding fat – some horses with PSSM are overweight • Try forage alone • If more DE needed add source of fat • Vegetable oil – 600 mL or 2.5 cups max • Rice bran – 2 kg or 4.5 lb max

  4. Cushing’s (Hyperadrenocorticism) • Older horses (> 15 y) • Tumor of pituitary gland • Overproduction of ACTH → cortisol • Feedback regulation doesn’t work

  5. Cushing’s (Hyperadrenocorticism) • Excessively long & curly hair coat • Doesn’t shed out in Spring • Dark hair lightens to golden color • Weight loss, muscle wasting • Excessive sweating • Increased appetite & thirst • Increased urination

  6. Cushing’s (Hyperadrenocorticism) • Complications: • Chronic laminitis • Type 2 diabetes – insulin resistance • Recurrent infections • Poor wound healing • Suppressed immune system
