  4. Nanny confesses "the gypsy woman . . . gave me some powerful pills. I've always wondered if the pills were the cause of Nessarose's affliction"(383) Nessarose might not be Frex's daughter.

  5. Liir • Told everyone a magic carp in the well told him that Fiyero is his father. • Elphaba told Nanny that Liir might be her son. "I was in no state to know what was happening to me, and I spent a year in a deathly sleep. It's just possible I brought a child to term and delivered it" (372).

  12. Elphaba and the Cow • The Cow gave up fighting against the laws against Animals. • No more Animal rights. • Elphaba lets the Cow go. • Nessarose eats cow liver a few days later

  13. Frex • Wants Elphaba to rule. • Elphaba believes that a democratic government would be best. • Frex does not want to leave Cowen Ground because that would mean leaving Nessarose. • He and Melena shared Turtle Heart and Turtle Heart and him shared Nessarose.

  14. Elphaba • is going back to Kiamo Ko • Nessarose writes in her will that Elphaba will get her shoes • Nessarose tells Elphaba how she might have a phantom soul. • Elphaba has a feeling that Madame Morrible was working with the Wizard. • "Who is in thrall to whom?" (416)

  18. Death of Nessarose • Nessarose is killed by house. • Some people mourn... • Others make jokes: • "She really brought down the house!" (326) • An "Alien" inside house (Dorothy) • Seen as a saint by Munchkinlanders.

  22. Eminent Thropp No More • Elphaba arrives in Munchkinland • Told she has no "particular liberties" anymore. • Shows they were not on good terms. • Want to have a democratic government. • Elphaba goes to see Frex • Devastated by loss of Nessarose. • "How will I live without my pet?" (433)

  23. Glinda • She was there when the Tornado hit. • Tells of Nessa's death: • "There was no blood. ... [her] last few devoted followers thought this meant her spirit was taken up intact, and that she suffered little" (438). • Meets Dorothy • Tells her to visit the Wizard • Allowed her to take Nessarose's shoes. • Elphaba mad: http://images.wikia.com/wicked/images/1/10/Glinda.jpg "Nessa promised I could have them when she died!"   25. The Grimmarie (and Murder) • "This is an ancient manuscript ... generated in a world far away from this one" (450). • The Wizard talks of murder. • "What I did, what I do, cannot be murder. For, coming from another world, I cannot be held accountable to the silly conventions of naive civilization" (451).

An "offer" is made • Elphaba "offers" the Grimmarie. • Demands the Wizard leave Oz and unhand Nor. • Wizard demands to have the Grimmarie first. • "You should not trust my promise" (452). • "She had no intention of surrendering the Grimmerie to such as monster. If need be she would die to keep it out of his hands" (454).

Dorothy Described • Milla - "Well I think she's a holy little girl" (460). • "Dorothy has this sweet charity toward her dog, a pretty dreadful little beast" (461). • "Dorothy is a child, but she has a heaviness of bearing like an adult" (461). • Boq - "I was charmed by her, to tell you the truth" (461). • Dorothy is shown in a very positive light. • Foreshadows her actions.

  30. To Kill a Morrible • Elphaba develops a Plan. • Destroy the Source of her suffering • Madame Morrible • "The Witch would go and try to accomplish the task set out for herself fifteen years ago. Madame Morrible still waited to be killed" (463). • She runs from Boq's house because she is excited. • Runs until exhausted and remembers she has a broom. • Takes flight to carry out her plan.

  31. Shiz is Whack, Yo • Shiz has become a "Money Factory" (463). • Economy has swelled in awareness of War. • While visiting University, Elphaba sees three girls. • She is startled by this... • Why? (Pg. 464) • Security at Shiz University has been highly relaxed. • Notice: Madame Morrible is no longer in control. • What does this show about Morrible?

  32. Fulfilling the Plan • Elphaba gets permission to see Madame Morrible. • Poses as a friendly old student. • Morrible is DOA. (~5 mins past) • "Madame Morrible rested in a gray mound, ... her eyes open and shallow without motion" (467). • She beats Morrible's body with a trophy. • Trophy reads: "In appreciation of everything you have done" (467). • Does not go back to kill Grommetik

  33. Avaric • Elphaba goes to Avaric to announce her deed. • Does so in worry that her message will not be heard • He is amused by her claims. • Opinion: Do you think he believes her? • In her discussion, she is reminded of a saying: • "No one controls your destiny. Even at the very worst--there is always a choice" (472). • Sparks a discussion on evil

  34. Evil? • "Evil isn't a thing, it's not a person, it's an attribute like beauty..." (474). • "It's a power, like wind..." (474). • "It's an infection..." Searching for Acknowledgement • While having dinner with Alveric, Elphaba tells his guests about Madame Morrible's death. • Leaves Alveric's home drunk. • Encounters a dwarf • "But you try very hard at life..." (477) • "Why is my life so plagued? Who positioned her to influence my life?" (477) • Her = Yackle

  36. Emotional Devastation • The Time Dragon acts out Elphaba's life. • Act One: The Birth of Holiness • Act Two: The Birth of Evil • Act Three: Marriage of the Sacred and the Wicked • Elphaba decides on a new goal: obtain her sister's shoes from Dorothy • "She would make one last try for the shoes. She had nothing left to lose....Maybe, if she tried, she could shrug her shoulders and leave Munchkinland to its own fate"(483)

  37. Thoughts of Suicide • The Witch is flying on her broomstick intoxicated towards Kiamo Ko. • She considers suicide because she is emotionally tired. • "She could give up these efforts. She could forsake Nor. She could release Liir. She could abandon Nanny. She could surrender Dorothy. She could give up the shoes" (485). • What do you think is preventing Elphaba from killing herself?

  38. Seeking Acknowledgement • The next morning, the Witch wakes up with a hangover. • She returns home. • "I'm glad you're back" (486). • Liir caught a golden carp. • She wants to see a reaction for 'killing' Madame Morrible; no response, everything is still the same. • No one seems to care.

  39. Nostalgia • The Witch sees herself in Dorothy. Why? • "Is it that Dorothy reminds me of how Nor was at this age?" (487) • "the Witch had never warmed to the glowing promise of children. She had always felt more alone in this regard than in her color" (487). • "Dorothy reminds me of myself, at that age" (487).

  40. Revelation • The Witch dreams about the otherworld, and wakes up from a nightmare. • Witch makes a sleeping elixir and sees Nanny. • Witch is conflicted with whom her father really is. • Nanny doesn't remember where the green bottle came from.

  41. News • In the morning, Liir comes back from the Wizard's soldiers • What does Liir report to the Witch? • Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Lion requested for the Wizard to grant their wishes. • Wizard rejects their wishes unless the party kills the Witch. • Dorothy's last name is Gale.

Faith and Evil • The Witch believes she does not have a soul. • "A person who doesn't believe in the Unnamed God, or anything else, can't believe in a soul" (495). • "Is religion itself—that tired and ironic phrase—the necessary evil?" • Consider Nessarose and Frex • "And would we recognize the Unnamed God if it knocked on our doors?"

  47. The Witch and The Concept of Evil • "It isn't hard to find evil in this world...Evil is more easily imagined than good, somehow" (496). • To what extent do you agree with this statement? Why?

  48. Longing • The Witch thinks the Scarecrow is Fiyero. • "Fiyero didn't die...He was imprisoned, and he has escaped. He is coming home to Kiamo Ko, he is coming home to me, and he is disguised as a scarecrow because he doesn't yet know what he will find" (498) • "It would take brains to think up such a plan" (498) • "Her dreams brought Fiyero closer and closer to home" (498).

It was hard to tell what her weapons were, except for that sort of inane good sense and emotional honesty" (507).
