(WGB p. 736) • Goal is to develop a sturdy trunk from which will radiate strong, well-placed main limbs. • Main steps: • Select a leader • Select shoots at evenly spaced intervals, remove others. (leave branches on lower trunk for a couple years). • Select U-shaped crotches vs. V-shaped. • Remove branches growing toward center of tree.
