  3. ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS • Accomplishments are created from: • Problems solved • Actions taken • Results achieved • This is known as the PAR format: Problem, Action, Result. Unit 11 - Lesson 51 Accomplishment Statements

ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS • Ideally results should be measurable (written with numbers). • Increased something • Motivation increased by 20 percent • Generated revenue • Revenue increased by $1,000 last month • Reduced time • New procedures reduced downtime by one-third • Cut costs • Shipping costs were cut by $500 last quarter Unit 11 - Lesson 51 Accomplishment Statements

ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS • Start by recalling a problem you solved. • Write a paragraph about the problem. • Next write a description of the actions you took to address the problem. • Think of action words (achieved, researched, motivated, instructed). • Now, what were the results of your actions? COLLECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Whenever you do anything that solves a problem, document it. • Include volunteer work, problems at home, problems at work, hobbies, offices held in clubs—anything that highlights your talents, interests, and skills. • It’s important to write these down when they happen, or they could be forgotten. USING STORIES TO DESCRIBE ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Solving problems usually involves more than one skill. • A story can be the foundation of more than one accomplishment. • For example, planning a vacation demonstrates budgeting, coordination, and time management. USING ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Accomplishments give more weight to a resume because they show measurable achievements. • Add accomplishments to an application letter to further demonstrate your qualifications for a position. • Accomplishments demonstrate transferable skills. • The stories behind accomplishments are used during interviews to support your achievements. ACCOMPLISHMENT DATABASE • Begin to build your own personal database of accomplishments categorized by skills. • For example, under Improving Systems: • Streamlined order processing time by 25 percent after transferring manual tracking system to Excel. • Cut shipping costs by $400 per month after training staff on streamlined procedures. • Analyzed bottlenecks in tracking system and created new procedures that reduced shipping costs by $400 per month.
