Crustaceans • Named after their hard exoskeleton-crust. • Only some live in freshwater & land. • Most are found in marine habitats. • Play major roles in the food webs • Humans harvest edible ones. • Majority consume phytoplankton; some larval/small adult invertebrates, fish eggs & fish larvae. • Repeatedly molt and shed their exoskeleton.

  3. Crustaceans • Simplest onesresemble the annelid ancestors in having pairs of similar appendages along most of their body. • Complex ones have unspecialized appendages evolved into many diverse structures. • Claws of lobsters & crabs-used to collect food, intimidate other animals & sometimes dig burrow. • Feathery appendages comb microscopic bits of food from the water.
