  4. Speech • What is a Speech? • It’s a type of _________________ that tries to convince readers to take a specific action.

  5. What’s in a Speech • ___________________________ • This is the purpose of a speech—to get people to do something. Getting people to act is going to take some convincing. • ___________________________ • Used to back up the opinions and arguments in a speech; it’s the evidence that wins people over.

You want the audience to agree with you and feel strong enough to take action, so use strong words. • ____________________________ • Often, speakers can convince an audience by answering their questions. Think about what questions an audience might have and then try to answer them in your speech.

  7. Why give a Speech? • To inform • A speech might focus on a problem and call listeners to act • To Express an Opinion • It’s not enough to express your opinions. The speaker needs to convince the audience to agree with his or her ideas.

Why give a Speech? • To Call to Action • Often, a speaker wants an immediate response from listeners—a response that involves taking an action to solve a problem. • To Present Solutions • Sometimes a speaker can be clear about the problem, but vague about the best course of action. Be sure to analyze the situation and evaluate the speaker’s plan.
