    14. 14 Most of the units in the market are constrained for one or two types of operation, an any changes on the unit layout, or structural changes in mode of operation, dependent on the technology owners. Therefore, with the assemblage of new units the classification takes into account the number and type of valves and pumps, dead volumes fraction and principally its flexibility, i.e., its capacity of operating different modes with the same unit, and therefore to extend its own performance and operability… In the Flexible SMB unit it has been chosen the two SD valves per stream in the extract and raffinate current and one SD per stream in the feed and eluent/desorbent currents and a two-way valve per column, Figure for [1  2  2  1] configuration. By this means it is possible to operate most of the different modes, as simple adjustment and columns re-configuration. Namely, Asynchronous SMB, PowerFeed, Gradient SMB, JO (Pseudo-SMB etc…) Most of the units in the market are constrained for one or two types of operation, an any changes on the unit layout, or structural changes in mode of operation, dependent on the technology owners. 16. 16 Tested for [1 2 2 1] classical SMB configuration for the separation of R,S (alpha) tetralol racemic mixture. (Mike’s system). In pilot or lab-scale SMB units, the relative volume associated with equipment and transfer lines is indeed an issue and usually these type of units are designed to account for it in its own operation mode. Nevertheless, is still a proxy to the use of more detailed models and some differences are noted… here it is also shown a detailed model accounting for dead volumes and tubing connections…Tested for [1 2 2 1] classical SMB configuration for the separation of R,S (alpha) tetralol racemic mixture.
