  1. GOALNCI-DESIGNATION OF STANFORD UNIVERSITYAS A COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER Email: kgblume @stanford.edu Phone: 3-0822 Fax: 8-4418

  2. NCI-DESIGNATED CANCER CENTERS IN THE USA/CA USACA Basic Research Cancer Centers 8 2 Clinical Cancer Centers 15 1 Comprehensive Cancer Centers 396 62 9

  3. A Comprehensive Cancer Center has reasonable depth and breadth of research activities in each of three major areas: basic, clinical, and prevention, control, behavioral and population-based research and exhibits a strong body of interactive research that bridges these scientific areas. In order to receive recognition as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center the center must meet the above scientific requirements as well as provide outreach, education and information on cancer to the community it serves.

  4. In the area of clinical cancer research, a comprehensive cancer center is encouraged to initiate and conduct early phase, innovative clinical trials and to participate in the NCI’s cooperative group system by providing leadership and accruing patients to trials.

  5. All NCI-designated cancer centers (basic, clinical or comprehensive) satisfy the following six characteristics: 1. CANCER FOCUS 2. INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENT 3. CENTER DIRECTOR 4. ORGANIZATIONAL CAPABILITIES 5. FACILITIES 6. INTERDISCIPLINARY COORDINATION AND COLLABORATION
