Introduction. The Nasometer II is the newest hardware/software version of the acclaimed Nasometer which Kay introduced in 1986Since that time, the Nasometer has become a standard clinical tool, internationally, for assessment and treatment of patients with nasality problems.. . 3. The instrument’s success is based on its simplicity, non-invasiveness, easily interpreted data and validity. Numerous articles in the professional literature reference the instrument's broad applicability to patients with nasality problems.

    4. Components of the Nasometer 6400 The Nasometer II uses an innovative headset device, worn by the patient, which separates the oral and nasal cavities with a baffle plate.

    5. Microphones mounted on the top and bottom of the plate collect the acoustic energy generated during speech. The client’s simply read a short story or group of words from the screen and the microphone captures the production.

    6. How the Nasometer works The instrument computes a ratio of the acoustic data acquired by the two microphones that are positioned on the top and bottom of the plate. The ratio calculated is called ”nasalance” which is indicative of nasality in speech and is displayed as a percent.

    7. The higher the nasal-to-oral air pressure ratio, the higher the nasalance and the more nasal the speech will be The real-time display enables the clients to monitor their velopharyngeal control during speech. There are biofeedback games which are visual displays which reflect the degree of nasalance.

    8. Norms have been established for comparison which is helpful in the evaluation of patients who have problems of nasal resonance The statistical analysis of collected data on standardized passages/phrases can be compared to normative data The quantitative data can be used to document patient performance before and after therapy, surgery, or a prosthetic fitting

    9. Applications Speech-Language Pathologists, otolaryngologists and plastic surgeons all use the Nasometer to help objectify and supplement their diagnostic, follow-up testing and treatment protocols.

    10. Applications Cleft Palate Motor Speech Disorders Hearing Impaired Palatal Prosthetic Fitting Functional Nasality Problems Singing Pedagogy

    11. Features and Advantages of the Nasometer 6400 Non-invasive, easy to use clinical tool Innovative headset with clear advantages over hand-held masks and invasive techniques Real-time visual feedback of nasality in clients speech

    12. Continued… Quantitative data to document patient’s progress before therapy, surgery, or prosthetic fitting Clear, intuitive displays for monitoring velopharyngeal control during speech Games with animated graphics to reward good speech behavior High correlation with other instrumental techniques

    13. Continued… Standardized assessment passages for adults and simplified passages for children (SNAP Test) Calibration system included Auditory playback of patient’s speech production

    14. Computer requirements The Nasometer II works in a Windows environment (Windows 2000 or Windows XP). Computer should have a Pentium II processor with speech >400 MHz. One PCI slot is required for the system’s plug –in card

    15. Continued…. The computer’s video graphics card should include accelerators for high-speed graphic display The computer should also have sufficient hard disk space so the clinician can store speech samples, scoring, and reports.
