  2. Today’s Discussion Thomson Reuters Citation Metrics for Journal Analysis • The Data Foundation • Importance of Benchmarks and Baselines • Metrics – Power in Simplicity • Practical Applications

  3. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsThe Data Foundation Web of Science Journals Authors Papers Disciplines Institutions Countries

  4. The Web of Science Foundation A Core Philosophy of Superior Collection Development Century of Science Science Citation Index 8,900 Titles 1945 1900 SSCI 2,800 Titles Century of Social Sciences 1956 1900 A&HCI 1,550 Titles 1975 CPCI 1990 • Multidisciplinary - Science, Social Science, Arts & Humanities • 11,900 unique journal titles, coverage back to 1900 • Capture of Author Cited References across the entire span of coverage provides for navigation and discovery that is simply unavailable elsewhere. Nothing comparable exists. • Conference Proceedings Citation Indexes -- 12,000 conferences covered annually, Coverage from 1990, Cited References from 1999

  5. Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis • With regard to all journal evaluations: • We are “publisher-neutral”, no special consideration is given to a particular publisher. Commercial, academic, open-access, etc. – all publishers are treated the same with regard to individual journal evaluations.

  6. Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Content • Timeliness of Publication – the ability to meet a pre-established publication schedule. This is very important, and is the reason why we typically examine three subsequently published issues at minimum, and often more. • International Publishing Conventions – complete bibliographic information at all levels -- forjournals, articles, authors, and cited references. • English language article titles, abstracts, keywords, and cited references in the Roman Alphabet are highly desirable – in order to reach the widest possible audience. • Peer Review – absolutely essential. • International Diversity • Citation Analysis

  7. Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Scope -- topics covered -- the nature of overall content (original papers, review articles, “methods” papers, etc.) -- appropriate intellectual level • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis Subjective considerations are important here. Essentially -- “What does this journal bring to the ISI database, to our collection of influential titles?”

  8. Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Authors, Editors, and Editorial Advisory board Members – • Are they internationally diverse? • Does this journal reflect the global nature of research today? • Regional Journals • We also seek to cover the best regional journals as well, again, to properly reflect the global nature in which research takes place. • This is especially important for the social sciences, where local influence greatly impacts education, law, etc. • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis

  9. TS Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Journal Level – • If the journal has been in existence for several years, a citation history will be available. This of course can be extremely valuable to the process. • Measure of overall Citations, approximate Impact Factor, and Immediacy Index would be typical statistics utilized. • Authors and Editors – • An examination of individual citation histories for authors and editors is quite important, and in the case of a new journal is the only indication of the potential citation influence of that publication. • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis Estimating Potential Influence

  10. Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Content Comparing Results and Making Selections Journals under evaluation are compared to journals that are already covered in the TR database, as well as other journals under evaluation – again, this is done within the realm of specific subject categories. In consideration of all factors, we are looking to add journals that best enhance the collection. • International Diversity • Citation Analysis

  11. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsThe Data Foundation • Web of Science is an extremely valuable discovery resource. However, it is also a valuable “intelligence” resource – a tool for characterizing and gauging published output and influence of papers, individuals, etc. – indispensible for basic comparisons. • 23.3 cites/paper • H-index: 13 • 14.5 cites/paper • H-index: 7 • 9.8 cites/paper • H-index: 7 • 4.2 cites/paper • H-index: 3 • But how “good” is this? • What is the context?

  12. Web of Science – Capture of Cited References Across a Century of Research What does this enable in Web of Science? Unique Discovery

  13. Web of Science: Analyze, Visualize, Evaluate -- Gain Insight

  14. Fundamental Info Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: -- 6987 items included in Web of Science 1999 - mid-2008 4305 Articles & Reviews 1999-2008, “Citable Items” Authors with Papers in the BJU Int top 5% Cited for this time period Contributing Authors and Institutions • Published papers per year, most prolific contributing authors, institutions, countries, highly cited authors, etc.

  15. “Impact Factors” Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: Often a catalyst for debate, journal Impact Factors are however a standard within the realm of scholarly publishing as a measure of influence of journals within particular disciplines. Though it is not possible to utilize Web of Science to calculate and predict official Impact Factors with absolute certainty, exact matches to official Impact Factors would be common for many journals.** Using Web of Science data to closely approximate official Impact Factors for the vast majority of Web of Science journals is a sound expectation.**

  16. “Impact Factors” Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: With Web of Science : • Calculate approximate journal Impact Factors prior to annual release of the JCR. • Obtain an indication, months in advance, of where your journals and competing journals will stand in forthcoming JCR rankings. • Calculate approximate Impact Factors for journals not indexed within Web of Science. • Recognize and track the influence of these titles, better support editorial & business decision-making. Note: Journal self-cites would of course not be included in the data. • Analyze articles from a particular journal to reveal exactly what has contributed to the Impact Factor. • Better understand the influence of various genres of papers within a particular editorial scope.

  17. Citations per Paper Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: • Average citations per paper can be calculated and viewed in many ways, and are of course important “indicators” of trends. • Here, for example -- For the corpus of papers published by a journal for all of its Web of Science years of coverage – the “average citations per paper” calculated at year-end year for the existing corpus.

  18. Project-Based Analyses Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: Source Papers: PR China Authored Citing Papers: PR China Authored • For a multitude special projects, Web of Science can prove invaluable. • Geographic Penetration: Reveal the influence-penetration of a journal or journals based on source papers (articles and reviews only) and citing papers from authors within specific Countries

  19. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsEstablishment of Baselines and Benchmarks

  20. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsEstablishment of Baselines and Benchmarks Individual records/articles compiled for Journal of Psychopharmacology Gauging Article-Level Performance Journal Expected Citations and Category Expected Citations provide perspective on the influence of a published work through benchmark expected citations for a similar article type published in this Journal and this overall Category in the same year.

  21. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsPresentation of Meaningful Metrics With these established benchmarks, the expected times cited for all types of articles, we make use of the actual times cited for each paper and create a simple ratio derived from a body of published work. The result is a clear, comprehensible metric that immediately communicates a level of performance. Easily Understood = Comfortably Utilized For Example…

  22. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsPresentation of Meaningful Metrics “Journal of …” Contributing Author Detail & Ranking The value of these metrics – each author’s body of work, every individual paper, has been measured against the expected rate of citation for a paper published in the journal, and the overall category, in the same publication year. With a baseline of 1.0 representing the “expected” rate of citation for each body of work, there is an immediate gauge of level of influence – performance.

  23. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsMeaningful Metrics for Practical Application • Our metrics provide the ability to gain detailed insight into a journal, and support of both editorial and marketing activities. • Identify highly cited papers, influential contributing authors, and institutions, countries – and explore these in detail for recent years. • Determine impact of special issues and supplements based on the “citedness” of their content. • Reveal authors and affiliated institutions and countries citing your journal – help to identify market penetration in unique ways.

  24. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsMeaningful Metrics for Practical Application “Journal of…” Most prolific contributing institutions “Journal of …” Influentialcontributing institutions. Editorially – for those institutions that have contributed more highly influential material, have you published an acceptable/desired number of papers? On the business side – Are all of the top 50% in either ranking subscribing-institutions?

  25. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsMeaningful Metrics for Practical Application Back to Authors -- From an editorial perspective – the ability drill down into detail for contributed works from each author.

  26. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsMeaningful Metrics for Practical Application Back to Authors -- From an editorial perspective – the ability drill down into detail for contributed works from each author – also in summary form.

  27. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsMeaningful Metrics for Practical Application Information for Authors, Institutions, Countries, etc. that have cited the content of your journal. Where has the journal penetrated in terms of influence, visibility? Is it influencing important sources, desired subscribers? Where is its influence lacking? Where might resources/initiatives be targeted?

  29. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsMeaningful Metrics for Practical Application Information for Authors, Institutions, Countries, etc. that have cited the content of your journal. Editorial & Marketing Those individuals most frequently citing a journal are also among the best candidates for manuscript submissions, potential editorial positions, reviewers, and of course subscribers.

  30. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsThe Resource – InCites and “Journal Analysis Data” • Based on the content of a journal, JAD presents detailed information for each published article, as well as summary analyses of contributing Authors and their affiliated Institutions and Countries. • Each paper displays associated performance metrics: • Expected Citation counts based on Journal and Category • Percentile Rank in field (category) • Second Generation citations • For each journal JAD via InCites also includes Citing Papers and associated information – citing authors, institutions, countries, journals, etc.

  31. Thomson Reuters Research AnalyticsAn Important, Objective Piece of the Puzzle Citation Metrics are of course just one of many aspects of journal assessment and analysis. They are very important in helping to understand why a journal stands where it does, as well as revealing potential directions of editorial and marketing activities.
