Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis • With regard to all journal evaluations: • We are “publisher-neutral”, no special consideration is given to a particular publisher. Commercial, academic, open-access, etc. – all publishers are treated the same with regard to individual journal evaluations.

  6. Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Content • Timeliness of Publication – the ability to meet a pre-established publication schedule. This is very important, and is the reason why we typically examine three subsequently published issues at minimum, and often more. • International Publishing Conventions – complete bibliographic information at all levels -- forjournals, articles, authors, and cited references. • English language article titles, abstracts, keywords, and cited references in the Roman Alphabet are highly desirable – in order to reach the widest possible audience. • Peer Review – absolutely essential. • International Diversity • Citation Analysis

Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Editorial Scope -- topics covered -- the nature of overall content (original papers, review articles, “methods” papers, etc.) -- appropriate intellectual level • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis Subjective considerations are important here. Essentially -- “What does this journal bring to the ISI database, to our collection of influential titles?”

Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Authors, Editors, and Editorial Advisory board Members – • Are they internationally diverse? • Does this journal reflect the global nature of research today? • Regional Journals • We also seek to cover the best regional journals as well, again, to properly reflect the global nature in which research takes place. • This is especially important for the social sciences, where local influence greatly impacts education, law, etc. • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis

  9. TS Journal Evaluations The Components: • Basic Journal Publishing Standards • Journal Level – • If the journal has been in existence for several years, a citation history will be available. This of course can be extremely valuable to the process. • Measure of overall Citations, approximate Impact Factor, and Immediacy Index would be typical statistics utilized. • Authors and Editors – • An examination of individual citation histories for authors and editors is quite important, and in the case of a new journal is the only indication of the potential citation influence of that publication. • Editorial Content • International Diversity • Citation Analysis Estimating Potential Influence

In consideration of all factors, we are looking to add journals that best enhance the collection. • International Diversity • Citation Analysis

However, it is also a valuable “intelligence” resource – a tool for characterizing and gauging published output and influence of papers, individuals, etc. – indispensible for basic comparisons. • 23.3 cites/paper • H-index: 13 • 14.5 cites/paper • H-index: 7 • 9.8 cites/paper • H-index: 7 • 4.2 cites/paper • H-index: 3 • But how “good” is this? • What is the context?

Fundamental Info Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: -- 6987 items included in Web of Science 1999 - mid-2008 4305 Articles & Reviews 1999-2008, “Citable Items” Authors with Papers in the BJU Int top 5% Cited for this time period Contributing Authors and Institutions • Published papers per year, most prolific contributing authors, institutions, countries, highly cited authors, etc.

  15. “Impact Factors” Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: Often a catalyst for debate, journal Impact Factors are however a standard within the realm of scholarly publishing as a measure of influence of journals within particular disciplines. Though it is not possible to utilize Web of Science to calculate and predict official Impact Factors with absolute certainty, exact matches to official Impact Factors would be common for many journals.** Using Web of Science data to closely approximate official Impact Factors for the vast majority of Web of Science journals is a sound expectation.**

  16. “Impact Factors” Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: With Web of Science : • Calculate approximate journal Impact Factors prior to annual release of the JCR. • Obtain an indication, months in advance, of where your journals and competing journals will stand in forthcoming JCR rankings. • Calculate approximate Impact Factors for journals not indexed within Web of Science. • Recognize and track the influence of these titles, better support editorial & business decision-making. Note: Journal self-cites would of course not be included in the data. • Analyze articles from a particular journal to reveal exactly what has contributed to the Impact Factor. • Better understand the influence of various genres of papers within a particular editorial scope.

Citations per Paper Journal Profiling – Influence & Impact: • Average citations per paper can be calculated and viewed in many ways, and are of course important “indicators” of trends. • Here, for example -- For the corpus of papers published by a journal for all of its Web of Science years of coverage – the “average citations per paper” calculated at year-end year for the existing corpus.

With a baseline of 1.0 representing the “expected” rate of citation for each body of work, there is an immediate gauge of level of influence – performance.
