  1. Freeman-ASIA Undergraduate Awards for Study in East Asia

About the Program • The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East Asia, by providing students with the information and need-based financial assistance they will need. • Generously supported by the Freeman Foundation, and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), Freeman-ASIA offers awards ranging from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on the length of study and the financial need of the student. • Awards are given to students studying abroad within the following 15 countries/regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Eligibility Requirements • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. • Applicants must currently receive Need-Based Financial Aid or demonstrate through FAFSA a verifiable need for financial assistance to study abroad in Asia. • Applicants must be undergraduate students in good standing at an accredited college or university in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions) and must have at least one term remaining at their home institutions following their return. • Applicants must have applied or have been accepted to a country-based study abroad program from among the following countries and regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. • Applicants must have applied or been accepted to a study abroad program that awards academic credit through their home campuses or other accredited U.S. college or university. Programs must be a minimum of 8 weeks for the summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term, and 12 weeks for a semester term. • Applicants must have little or no previous experience in the country in which they plan to study. • * Please visit www.iie.org/freeman-asia for a complete listing of the eligibility requirements

  4. Application Process Identify a Study Abroad Program in East Asia that qualifies you for a Freeman-ASIA Award. Meet with your campus Study Abroad Adviser to obtain support for your Freeman-ASIA Application. Complete the on-line Freeman-ASIA Application prior to the application deadline. Submit your Financial Need Information to the Study Abroad Adviser and to IIE by the application deadline. Check with the Study Abroad Adviser to ensure that the Adviser Endorsement of your Freeman-ASIA Application has been submitted to IIE by the application deadline.

  5. Primary Application Evaluation Criteria Financial Need. Commitment to and proven interest in East Asian Studies. Quality of the Service Proposal.

  6. Preference in the Freeman-ASIA Program will be given to students who: Participate in language study that will enhance their ability to engage with the host culture Enroll in a study abroad program with at least 20 hours per week of class time, incorporating the study of an East Asian language, culture, and history.Participate in study abroad programs taught by host country faculty members. Demonstrate sincere interest in incorporating East Asian Studies into future academic and/or professional plans.

  9. Additional Funding Opportunities The Benjamin A.
