The software development company started interviewing in June for its new national development center in Gainesville, but most computer science graduates from the University of Florida already had taken jobs with other companies. Parkins, 22, passed up a job offer in February to focus on school and was worried that a lot of jobs were already taken when she graduated in the spring. On July 16, she was among the first four new graduates — three from UF — hired by the company. …

  7. CISE Degrees • CSC (Computer Science, CLAS) • CSE (Computer Science Engineering) • DAS (Digital Arts and Science) • CEN (Computer Engineering) All share a common core of CS classes, but differ in electives and other requirements

  8. CSC – Computer Science, CLAS • Focused on broad, general education • Great flexibility in courses and minors • Includes foreign language • Requires only one electrical engineering course

CSE – Computer Science Engr. • Focus on interdisciplinary electives • Two courses emphasize effective communication: • Professional Communications for Engineers • Writing or public speaking • Only 4 credits of electrical engineering required, BUT can take all CEN HW classes or some other minor

  10. DAS – Digital Arts & Science • Most narrowly focused of degrees • Emphasis on art and digital art • Modeling • Animation • Multimedia production

CEN (Computer Engineering) cont. • Proposed change: • Eliminate distinction between HW (CEE) and SW (CEN) Computer Engineering tracks • All would receive BS in Computer Engineering • Certificates (3 elective courses in a concentrated area, e.g. Sensor Networks, AI, etc) would distinguish each student’s degree

CEN (Computer Engineering) cont. • Advantages of CEN program: • Combined BS/MS option (offered in other programs in future) – can share 12 hours • ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accreditation • Others degrees accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) • Many top ranked CS departments are NOT accredited!
